headliner

it's not that hard to do if you do it like i did. i removed some or most of the upper trim and just ripped it out. it's made out of this foamy/fiberglassy stuff so it rips real easily. i suggest wearing gloves because the pieces are itchy. also, if you do it this way you will need to use a vacuum to get up all the excess foamy/fiberglassy pieces.

There is another write up by a retailer that sells XJ headliner kits that is also pretty good. I'll look and see if I can't find it, try NAXJA search and see what you can find. Maybe google xj (or Cherokee) headliner.
GOJEEP is also a good source for many things. Look and see if he has anything on headliners.

I bought a new headliner for $20 on ebay and installed it myself. You need to remove all the perimeter trim including that along the rear hatch, as well as the dome lights which are mounted with clips, and the top of the rear hatch shocks temporarily to slide them under the removed trim. Some of it you can let dangle away and allow the headliner to slide out the rear. While I was advised to use special high heat headliner adhesive instead of interior adhesive(which is easy to find at pep boys, etc), the roof of my 88 is a double wall which insulates the adhesive from direct contact, as well as being adhered to the opposite side of the cardboard headliner plate. I live in sunny Southern California and mine has fared well with the pep boys stuff for a year now and its still holding up great. Maybe some hotter weather might prove different results. It took about 2-3 hours to complete.

Great someone posted my link..Thanks!

Start by taking off the trim from the back and work your way forward. I worked from front to back and it was a pain in the butt! It helps if you have two people pulling it and installing...but not necessary. There are two Velcro strips on the headliner just above the windshield. Gently pull apart and place a sheet of paper to stop them from grabbing. After the trim is pulled the headliner is held up by four metal hooks...use a screwdriver to release the hooks from the roof frame.

I did it... Go for it! Once you attach the fabric with glue and cut the edges, make sure you leave enough extra fabric along ALL four edges so you can tuck everything under and hold it well....especially in the front.

I mistakenly cut the front too short.....which I didn't realize until I attaching it. I solved it by sewing extra fabric along the front edge....then tucking it all under. So don't make my mistake.

Here's the website for where I bought the headliner kit.
