I gotta call up to the Forest Service and talk to Greg to see how it looks for being open. I'll try to talk to him in the next couple of days, haven't been able to reach him this weekend. If Swamp isn't open yet that weekend we can always run Red/Coyote. All the times I've been up there I've yet to camp at Coyote Lake, which would be nice. We always end up camping at Red and then running out from there to Coyote or Mirror.
It's pretty hot now, and looks like it could stay that way, so the snow could melt fast. We'll just have to see how it goes. If it's not going to be open, we'll have to make the call to either go to Coyote or do Swamp on another weekend....or both. :)

I was up playing on Bald over Fathers Day. We were still driving over snow patches on the lower part of the trail...

Just talked to Greg at the Forest Service. At this time Swamp looks doubtful for two weeks from now. But, it's been hot and a lot of snow has melted. For some reason there are a lot of trees down this year, which is making more work to get a crew through the trail to check it out. They did not get to the trailhead at either end of Swamp last weekend. We found this to be true in our area also, one of our adopt-a-trails had 25 tress down, which is many more than usual.
Red Lake just opened, and Coyote should open in two weeks. This could put us in exactly the same situation we were in last year. If it stays hot, they will likely open Coyote before that weekend, but we won't know until the week before. If it stays really hot, Swamp might be open, but it might not be until that Sat if at all.
So, it looks like we plan on Coyote and we'll see how it develops. I would be happy to drive into and camp at Coyote, it's a very nice spot.

Find Staff Sergeant Diaz, he knows where it is.
He has a Black XJ.

I know Diaz well. We just wheeled Corral Canyon 2 weeks ago. Problem is he now deployed to the east coast for 3 months.

I have some good news guys. I am running Red lake this weekend.
I will be on a cattle drive the next weekend, and we go past swamp lake on the other side. So I will let you all know the condition a few days before our trip. Plus Greg Marks should have the word on whether its open or not.

Camp unless you want to get a cabin in Shaver, but I'm sure it would be too late to get a reservation.
This report is from the Fresno Club websit:

Well whatever we decide on, I'm leaving Kerman Friday morning and either going on Swamp, Red/Coyote or just camping around Bald/Dinkey Creek. I may even check out the Spanish Route.

The Swamp route is open to the same spot is was last year when I scouted it for you guys. Its 2wd all up to it then a green gate, which I cant legally open for anyone anymore. Swamp could be open guys... the heat is on.

If swamp isn't open, I doubt I'll make it for this run. But fingers crossed right?

Does it mean nobody is going or does it mean everybody is going different places ?
What is the latest time for trail opening notice to come for run to proceed ?

I will call Greg at the Forest Service tomorrow and report in. However, for the first time in 10 years, I will not be able to lead this run. We'll have to decide tomorrow what we're going to do.
I would encourage any of you who are planning to go this weekend to post up so we can figure out what to do.

BTW, the Bakersfield Trailblazers are planning a run to Swamp Lake and Bald Mtn trails as a fund raiser for Surprise Canyon/Friends of Panamint Valley on the weekend of Aug 25-27. This is a simple run, we'll camp along the road to Swamp Lake, and make day runs on the Swamp Lake trail and Bald Mtn trail. Camping will be $20 donation per night per family/rig and dinner Sat night will be $10 per person. All proceeds will go directly to FOPV.
Just a note in case any of you might like to join us for this run.

I am sad to inform you all that I will be missing this years run ... AGAIN!
Things are just not working right, my health has been getting bad over the last few months. I have a doctors appointment thursday that may take me to bed rest for 4 to 6 months! I just cant justify this trip this year with a possible very expensive surgury in the near future.
Goatboy, I will let you know thursday night how august is looking.

Hey, you're WAY too young to be having any health problems. But, at least you recover a lot quicker when you're younger. Hope you get good news at the doctor.....whatever good news might be.
