OK, the wifey and I are expecting in Oct, and we've got to start thinking about the stuff we need to get--strollers, bottles, all the other stuff that doesn't come with a baby, but you have to have.

Anyone have any advice, links to informative sites, etc? I need an education on this stuff...any help would be much appreciated!

cool congrats on that, one of the best experiences of my life! my daughter Serena will be 2-months on the 14th.

Get lots and lots of diapers and some mild baby wipes, they are very sensitive to rashes when they are newborn. Get a nice car seat, ours clicks right in to our stroller so you don't have to transfer the baby as they tend to fall asleep on car rides. One of our best friends is her swing/seat that has a vibration mode, it vibrates her right to sleep.

A real nice breast pump(electric) is important if your wife will be breastfeeding(highly recomended as they develop immunities much quicker, among many other things),the pumping is slow but if your wife wants to rest or run errands it is a must to have pre-pumped milk. Our daughter did not take well to formula(tried it once) so we only give her breast milk and she is doing great. There are some great books out, I have some if you are interested, pay the shipping and they are yours. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions, it is a great experience so above all, enjoy your baby and good luck with the birth.

When you go furniture shopping don't buy just a crib, they have baby juvi furniture. The one we got consisted of 3+ pieces, trundle bed with 4 drawers under it, dresser that has a neat fold out top that makes it a changing table, nite table with 4 drawers in it. When the bed is setup as a crib the nite table goes on one end, a base piece goes on the other and the bars go between. When the crib time is done you take the bars off and the end piece and put them away somewhere, then take the nite stand off the other end and put it on the floor, the trundle bed turns into a youth bed by adding a matress extension that comes with it. We used ours for both ours then gave it to my brother in law for his.
A swing as stated above is a life saver however be aware that if you get one that plays music you'll be humming those songs to yourself the rest of your life...LOL..they will be stuck in your head forever....
You might want to rent the 'infant seat' from the hospital for the 6 months you will need it, thats the one that faces backwards and is required for newborns to 6 months IIRC..
As for strollers, Quadratec has some nice ones :D :D :D :D

I'm ok, I already have two kids, all I really needed was a Honda Odyssey and I have that covered! :D

Well...

Since you already have an XJ...

You'll need

semi-auto handgun in suitable caliber...

subsonic ammo...

a good supressor...

waterproof yet disposable sleeping bags...

shovel or concrete...

:D

Congrats!
Costco diapers and wipes work just fine and are cheaper. Start buying diapers now. You will not believe how many you will go through in a day. Toys r Us is a good place to look for strollers and car seats. Don't scrimp on the car seat and stroller. Also if you are tall make sure you get a stroller that has a tall enough handle so that you're not hunched over trying to push it. I've noticed that the cheaper strollers seem to be shorter. If you can find a high end baby store go there and look at strollers/seats and look at the highest quality stuff you can afford. You can buy the cheap diapers and such but don't scrimp where it counts.
Yes, a baby shower will net you all kinds of good stuff.
All of the big dept stores have killer sales on baby/kids clothes from time to time. My wife is the greatest bargain shopper there is and she'll come home home with bags of stuff from Sears for the boy's and she spends like $20-$30. Kohls, Marshalls, Ross are good places for clothes and shoes too.

Thanks for all the info, guys.

We just got back from Babies 'R' Us (like Toys 'R' Us, except it's all baby stuff) and Target where we registered for baby shower stuff and looked at, among many other things, strollers--the ones with the removable car seat that they can use until they're like 30 lbs (rear facing). Any recommendations from anyone on brand/model?

--Skullvarian: We registered for one of those vibrating thingies (I think), and yes, she'll be breastfeeding. Why buy milk when Mommy can make it for free--and the free stuff is WAAAAY better. What titles (books) do you have? I might take you up on that offer...

--RichP: We're getting an almost brand-new crib from our landlords for free (I've been doing yard work for them since Mr. Landlord had a heart attack several months ago), and I'm not sure if it converts or not--I don't think so. I'll cross that bridge later. And a musical swing is on the list, too.

--ChuckD: Congrats! Note of interest--we saw THREE sets of twins today at Babies 'R' Us. I don't know what's in the water up there, but I'm not sure I want any.

--Bradlybob: I'm not tall (5'9"), but I don't like cheap stuff. Bonus: The in-laws are buying the stroller/seat combo. ;0) My wife has been yard sale-ing for a bit, and her sister just had her second girl a year ago, so all those baby clothes will be available. (We learned we're having a girl, too.)

--Everyone else: Thanks! I'll be keeping all that in mind. Diapers and sleep seem to be necessary. I'm sure there will be quite a few late-night trips to Wal-Mart in the first few weeks/months/years. Luckily, WallyWorld is only 5-7 minutes away.

Keep it coming--this is good stuff!

I don't know how it works, but it does.
You will thank me.
Used these wonder drops on our oldest (now 3)
We've got 2 bottles waiting for the new arrival in Sept.

I've gone thru 2 bottles in the past 2 months!

Wife is now cut off from anything remotely dairy!

or cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, strawberries, etc...

Funny how loud an 8lb baby can fart!

Not funny how much it seems to hurt them...

Baby Tylenol... wife is a Peds nurse and they use that at the hospital to knock em out when cranky and of course sick. Not suggesting you dope up your kid of course.

Remember, all advice is GOOD ADVICE and it's also BAD ADVICE. Every kid is different, every single one.

There are NO experts in child rearing.

You WILL become your parents!!!

I can second the TIVO recommendation though!!

Mine are a 6 year old daughter and 3 year old son. You will know the names of every animated character on television along with the words to every song!!!

You thought wheeling your XJ was expensive.....

One tip I can give you regarding baby clothes. Check out the second-hand stores and consignment shops. You can get some really good deals there, and since babies grow so quick they're barely used :)

X2 haha!!

Seriously though, we found that being active and having a good stroller for outdoors was needed, we grabed one of these Jeep strollers at Babys-r-us. Its a little big and doesnet fit in the back of the volvo when its folded but thats what the jeep is for.
