Does anyone know if they make a code scanner for an '88 cherokee?
Every time I think I found one it says 91 on only.
thanks,

Snap-On used to make an adapter for one of their scanners that would work on the Renix XJs. Cost about $3,000 and I don't know if it is still available.
Not exactly the type of thing most do-it-yourselfers would pony up for.

Thanks guys.
I took mine to the dealer last week to have them trouble shoot it, paid the $35.00 only to be told
a. They didn't know what the problem(s) are.
b. No, we don't do print outs.
That is why I was looking.
thanks again!

The "scanner" CherpXJ showed can be bought from Harbor Freight Tools for $9.99 if you catch a sale. Then buy the FSM for your year and it will tell you what connections on the two diagnostic ports under the hood to probe for which tests. If you don't have the FSM for your XJ you should imvest in one, unless you plan to sell the Jeep like next week.

I agree with Eagle there...I just bought a FSM w/ both chassis and electircal systems for my 1989 XJ off of ebay. Ebay tends to have all sorts of that stuff, you just have to watch for a month or so. They were damn impressive when I got them, way more stuff then I ever expected.

From what I've been able to find out most scanners wont work on the older XJ's, not counting the big $$ ones like SnapOn. That's because fault codes can be read on the check engine lite. There's a sequence to it, just can't remember. It's something like, turn ignition switch on then off then on then off. Then turn it on again and count the number of times the check engine lite blinks. If it blinks like 3 times then pauses then blinks 3 more that's a code of 33. Got that from a scanner manufacturer on line.

key turn code retrieval wont work with old renix system xjs. Snapon scanner will only readout what the sensors are reading so you have to know what they should be reading to know if there is something foul happening. Looks like I'll be learning how to use the multimeter. Does anyone know of a online school to learn how to use a multimeter?

Ummm ... that works for the '91 through '96 (?) XJ, but not for the Renix models. We don't even have a check engine light -- just an "Emissions Service" light or something like that, which is nothing more than a red light that turns on after +/- 80,000 miles as a reminder to change the O2 sensor. It isn't in any way connected to the ECU and doesn't report trouble codes.

Like Eagle already said, there is NO check engine light function on Renix 4.0 '87-'90.
