What to use for "scotchgard" on seats

I want to protect my new cloth seats, but apparently scotchgard had to be reformulated in 2000 because it was showing up in everyone's livers. The new stuff supposedly doesn't repel grease, just water.

Has anyone got the skinny on what the best product currently on the market is - and how effective it is it? Is it even worth bothering?
