yes its another one of those exhaust questions. I know search well I did and no thread really got me where I wanted to be...

this is the closest I could find to my situation http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=86588&highlight=flowmaster
Im in the same boat I was planning on buying the flowmaster kit from rustys for my xj but when i was reading the info on that product it comes with a delta flow and Im not a huge fan of the delta flow

so yea heres the deal I want a good sounding flowmaster I realize im not running a 350 with cam and headers but I want my xj to sound as loud and clean as possible... the super 40 series really caught my eye when I was looking into flowmasters but without headers yet what would that sound like? I want a deep, throaty sound that resembles a ricer as little as possible would it be in my best intrest to just go with the delta from rustys or should I put togethter my own setup?

also I was thinking about running a turndown right out of the muffler and not running 2.5 pipe the rest of the way out... good idea or bad?

thanks

I run 2.5" pipe with a flowmaster series 40, all the way out to the rear.

its LOUD. ;) I dont mind it on the street but on the highway its irritating. I'm either going to stop driving the jeep daily or pull the flowmaster off.

Go ahead and run the exhaust all the way out, you will still get the sound you want.

Cal.

If you remove the muffler it'll be even louder!!

perhaps, but it will still be quieter than the sound of your steering components slopping around. :)

50 series
if your gonna pick a different muffler than already chosen then you need to back it up with some info or reasoning or something please.

I run Rusty's 2.5 exhaust with a series 40 and no cat...

It's not too loud for me...

That's what the sound system is for.

:D

I like em loud as long as it still has good tone and deepness.

if it was a DD then id run the super 40 (i still might run one instead of the 50) but the trails i run on are narrow so it just aplifies the sound and tends to get anoying

I run a Delta 40 with stock pipes. It's deep but not irritating. It's a nice low tone until about 2250 RPMs and then from there it takes on the classic Flowmaster growl.

Haha, thats funny, I noticed the same thing. I hear you brother, the louder the better. My buddy has a 2 chamber on his 4.0, and it sounds absolutely wicked. I just put a flow on mine, but I still have the cat, and yeah is better than stock, but its just not loud enough for me.

yeah man! but thats what I was worried about because I will be running my cat on mine because I dont feel like buying one of those o2 sensor cheaters but if it makes that much of a difference then I just might have too.. what 2 chamber muffler is he running?

Ok, I need a tissue to clean myself up. Mine doesn't sound like that with the cat, that has to be without a cat.

I have the 70 with 2.5" cat and 2.5" pipe and I think it's too loud. Drones at about 1700RPM and is a little too much on the highway. I'm going to experiment with using a resonator to quiet the thing down some, I like to feel like I'm driving a hearse, lol.

A hearse is appropriate for us 90yr old women I guess :D

alright I pretty much decided on my setup...

40 series with 2.5 out

should I go high flow cat or no cat? and if no cat what should I do about the o2 sensor? and if high flow anyone wanna direct me in the right direction of a good high flow cat for cheap?

cal

Be a friend to the air a bit, go with a hi-flow cat.. (not to mention the whole legal thing). A good cat wont really make much performance difference, and every little bit for the environment helps.

Zice

well then would you like to point me in the right direction toward a high flow cat?

alright its payday, I was going to make a new thread but I was wondering what I should do about a tail pipe... and looking around the only options I can find it rustys or stock and then Ill put a tip on it... but I called auto zone and they cant get me one so I dont know what to do...

so tailpipes?

i ran with out a cat for a while and detected no seat of the pants difference and not much noise difference, for the $50 price of a universal cat go environmentaly friendly route.

My set up is borla header to catco (from summit ) universal replacement cat to 50 series (original not delta) flowmaster with 2 1/2 pipes from rustys.

Call the tech guys at flowmaster. For the 4.0 they recomend the 50 series.

Sounds pretty loud at WOT or "spirited acceleration" still not quiet at idle on the freeway but not deafening.

I was getting discouraged because I couldnt find anyone that had what I needed locally and in my journey I drove past a midas so I went and asked them how much it would cost to get a 40 series with 2.5 out and it was like 177 which is like 20 bucks more than it would have cost me to get a delta flow (which i didnt want) and 2.5 out from rustys and I would have had to done it myself so I just had them do it... and they talked me into a high flow cat aswell which the total was like 300... im very happy with the whole setup...

A 40 with no cat sounds awesome. It's all about the no cat, that is, if it's legal for you to do.

here where I reside its illegal but I can get someone to slap a inspection sticker regaurdless... I would have gone with no cat but mine has an o2 sensor in it and i dont really feel like dealing with that hassle...
