evening all, after changing the oil filter adapter o rings this week i gave the xj a quick blast up and down the motorway [ about 30 miles ].
the oil filter casing is as dry as a bone so i guess it was successful, however,it now seems to be pissing out transmission fluid from between the tranny and the motor!
i iniatially thought it was engine oil but it is cold and smells different.
after reading about a breather pipe whilst searching is it possible that i've blocked this pipe whilst off-roading? or maybe its just marking its territory.
cheers,
rich.............

with my old LandRovers it was a good sign to see an oil leak,it meant it at least had some oil in it!!!:)

between the motor and tranny?

sounds like a front pump seal

OK,sounds like a job for the local auto transmission specialist.
cheers.

Broken cooling line is also a possibility specially if it's cold like you say.

OK,what does the tranny use for cooling? is it the tranny oil ?
also when i dipped the oil after my run the dip stick was very hot but dry. i bet that when i check it later when its cooled down it will show as full on the dip stick.

There is two lines that go forward to the radiator and back.

Correct. There are two fittings on the side of the transmission with lines going forward to the radiator - the cooler is in there.

As far as the front pump seal, it's not really a job for a specialist. It can be DIY if you have enough room to work, and the wherewithal to jack the transmission in and out. It's not an internal part - it's right behind the torque converter, and easily accessible without disassembling the transmission. I've done a few - it takes enough time to get the transmission in and out, plus about fifteen minutes. It can be done in an afternoon.

The clamp the holds the lines up right under the oil filter housing (just had to repair my '93 XJ cooling lines there right after getting the oil filter housing fixed. Tubing cutter and 2 compression tube joiners.)

Your cooler could be stopped up. My 96 was doing the same thing. When i added a add-on cooler and bypassed the stock one, the problem quit. I think my problem is my radiator is running hot.

cheers for the info, strange thing is that it doesn't do it all the time.it seems to happen after a bit of a run.looking underneath the oil runs down the gbox casing and drips of the casings lowest point.
