View Full Version : Question about spring plates going from D35 to 8.25

Okay, so I searched but I must not be using the right parameters as I did not find the answer I was looking for.
I am swapping in a 8.25 for my D35 and wanted to know if the spring plates are the same? I thought the 8.25 was 3" OD tube and the D35 was smaller. Is this correct and if so, it also means different U bolts, true?
Still getting the last of my parts to do my lift. :D
Thanks!

You def need new ubolts. I don't know about about spring perches though.

Same spring plates, if you look at yours the holes where the U-bolts go through are not just a hole, they are oval shaped and will fit either axle.
You definately need new U-bolts, technically, you should replace them every time you un-torque them. RE sells new U-bolts (you can get them through DPGoffroad.com, and Dirk will answer any other questions you may have.
You can also get U-bolts custom made locally, you want 1/2" diameter, 3" bend, about 9" tall.
Your driveshaft may also need to be shortened, but if you are still running the stock one and have a lift, it should offset ok.

Cool!!! Thanks for the info. I am doing a 3" lift with a SYE and a front driveshaft. From what I have read, this combo works well with an 8.25 for lenght. I'll pick up some U bolts and you are correct, you should replace them when you pull them, especially ones that have been on for 90,000 miles.

Okay a follow up to this. I was reading on another board (BTW, this is the only one I paid to use :D ) and someone else posted basically the same question and most people claimed the spring plates are different between the D35 and a 8.25/D44.
Does anyone have pictures or can confirm one way or the other? If I need plates, I need to start looking now for them.
Thanks!

I have done it before with d35 to c8.25. the ubolts are different but the plates are interchangable, just a little tight getting them through the holes. Just watch the threads as you stuff them in.

^^^^ What he said. I did this swap about 1 month ago. New ubolts and the 8.25 driveshaft. It's a direct bolt up.

What, you didn't believe me, I guess I never actually said that I did the same swap and used my old U-bolt plates....
Don't have any good pics of the spring plates other than this

You'll just have to take my word that that is an 8.25 axle and my original D35 plates....oh, and one of me sweating as I attempt to remove the drum brakes to make room for discs.
