I have a 2001 Cherokee with Auto Trans. I would like to improve the exhaust a bit by completely replacing it. I am having trouble finding a header for this particular year. Does anyone know why, or better yet, know where I can acquire one? I keep finding them for up to 97'. Is there a fit problem?
Thanks!

There really isnt anything to "improve".The late model factory header is very efficient!Save your money for something else!

Well the factory doesn't have a header style exhaust manifold on 00-01 XJ's (or 99-up WJ's, 00-up TJ's). They use a two piece cast iron exhaust manifolds that each one leads directly into a cat conv next to the left frame rail. This is the reason I do not believe anyone offers one yet. Someone out there has to be working on it. It would basically be two 3 cylinder headers. You could convert to a earlier style setup if your local smog laws allowed.

Ive only got 1 cat back behind the transfer case!Ive seen what your talking about on the TJ's though.

I found this note for you.
"Federal emission vehicles use only one catalytic converter, However, California emission vehicles incorporate two mini catalytic converters located after the exhaust manifolds and before the inline catalytic converter."
Here is a couple of photos showing the two setups.

Does the dual converter header restrict the exaust flow any more than the older single down pipe version.

so I guess that big a*s kink in my downpipe is supposed to be there? Weird.

I've run a couple of different headers on my 99 and by far the best has been my current set up from Banks...Can't beat their warranty either...You can get one directly from Banks or other 4x4 shops like 4wd.com

I'm not sure your note applies to '01 XJ's. My east coast '01 XJ has 2 mini cats in the down pipes and the emission sticker says it conforms to EPA LEV requirements and the California requirements. I wonder if they made the national and CA models the same for 2001.

Clifford Performance has a dual exit header... a custom set of downpipes would have to be fabbed by an exhaust shop... no big deal...
and the header could easliy be modified to accept the O2 sensors

Yes it's supposed to be there, maybe back pressure tuning.

They did drop the 2.5L engine so it's possible they built all CA emission models, but sometimes the CARB regulations differ from those of the EPA meaning they need to build to different packages.
