I had my xj die on my Fri morning. The Water pump was so fried that the pully carved a 1/4" deep groove in the side of the pump. I replaced it today along with the thermostat and what a differance it made. The engine purrs under the hood now. I had been chasing a noise for about a month and couldn't figure it out. It never overheated or leaked antifreeze, but this thing had to have been going for a while.
The biggest pain about replacing the WP was either taking the pully of or getting that pipe off to put on the new pump!
