Looking at getting the front shafts from a grand cherokee. I just had a set with ABS out of a 98 along with the hubs. They would not work with my brakes and would not work with my hubs either.
Is this because they were ABS or was this caused by them being from a 98? Do I just need the hubs and shafts from a 96 or earlier? Will having ABS matter?
Need to figure this out before I go back to the junkyard.
Thanks.

Kim.

Don't bother to look under the ones with the NP249 t-case (full time 4wd). They have the CV joints.

That is exactly what I am looking for but I ended up finding a couple with the 260 u-joints in pretty good shape. They have ABS and am trying to figure out if that is one of my problems getting them 98 shafts to work.

Not 100% positive here but I would guess that they didn't work due to your 85 outer knuckles. the hub units that went in those pre 90 D30s were slightly different. After 90 AFAIK they will all bolt up to each other, but they can be +/- 1/8 - 1/4" in terms of WMS, which usually doesn't matter so much, but there are one or two weird combinations that won't allow you to run the rotor...in which case you need to get a rotor from a different year, or you can get a spacer!! I just did a no-slip install on my friends 95ZJ this weekend and one of his hubs had like a 1/8" spacer on it, appeared to be a mopar part...forgot to write down the number. I would assume that the hub was replaced at a dealer with one that was essentially the same, but just needed that 1/8" for the WMS to be dead on. It was only one the passenger side.

Also, again, not 100% but I believe that if a ZJ has Ujoints that they are 297. Atleast all of the ones that I've seen are, including my friends 95, two other friends with 98s, and the ones that I've come across in junkyards. However, as we all know, this could just mean that alot of them are, not all of them. Jeep does some funny things. In my experience it's really hard to say that if it's from such and such a year then it will have this. it's that jeep thing that no one understands, ha.

Ooh, one more thing, if you think that it would help I have a spare set of knuckles from a 99 laying around. They may help if it is your 85 knuckles that are the issue.

Thanks for the help. Still don't know if the ABS is the problem or not. Have been searching with no luck.
So Anything after 1990 is different than my 85? I was thinking that I was able to look up to 1996. I am I wrong thinking that things changed in 97?

The knuckles, calipers, rotors and hubs changed after the '80's, went from a caliper bracket bolted to the knuckle to a one piece knuckle with integral caliper mount.

However, the shafts should be interchangeable (XJ,MJ,YJ,ZJ,) you just need to reuse your old style hubs.

In addition, IIRC you'd have to knock the ABS tone ring off to get them to fit properly.

Is there an easy way of doing this? They seem to be on there pretty good. So could the tone ring be making is so my 85 hub not work with the 98 shaft? The shaft looked pretty much the same except for having the tone ring. The 98 hub is a 1/4" off from my 85.

Thanks for the help all. I finally got the shafts to work. I did have to take the ABS ring off to get them to fit. Damn they were on there good. All is good now. Just have to bleed the brakes.
