OK I feel like I'm having a blonde moment here, but I got a set of poly extended bumps today, and am having "technical difficulties" wrapping my head around the install.

I have an extra pair of stock XJ rubber bumps with the metal 'cup' & stud, that thread into the top of the coil spring towers...

Somehow I envision that the old rubber part of the OEM has to come out of the cup and (one end of) the urethane part needs to go up in there. Does that rubber part just pull out or are more destructive measures called for? Does the new bump then just press into place?

Thanks in advance :D

On mine (1991), They appear to have 3 crimped indentations on the metal part where the rubber is held in. I believe they should pull out with some force, or cut out. When you get it out, bend the crimps back, and push them back in when the new ones are in. HTH.

Heres a pic of what I am talking about.

Odd... neither of the two sets I have (stock 88 short ones that are loose and in front of me or stock 89 +1" longer that I have on the XJ now) look like that pic. Both mine have smooth cups & no crimped prongs - unless they are on the inside & hidden.

If I saw those prongs I probably would have it figured out w/o this thread BTW... (blond moment disclaimer statement)

I guess I'll tear the rubbers out tomorrow and see WTF.

BTW which end goes up in the cup???

TIA as always

OK I got the pesky factory rubber bumps out... they certainly resisted being pulled out, but an hour each in the Hiroshimizer (1000*F oven) made them go away :viking:

I still am not clear how they are supposed to attach. If I cut them off at their widest point, they would be approx press fit into the metal cup...

OR to keep the length intact, I could bore out the small end 0.5" hole so it fits flush over that 0.75" round 'bolt head' inside the cup

Either way just then run a thick bead of black RTV around them and call it good?

Still feeling mighty blonde over these 'simple' devices :dunno:

You may have the wrong ones--post 98. (http://63.134.214.215/html/products/kitpage_details.asp?KitNo=KJ09114&MakeModelID=1399&Category=Bump%20Stops)
The pre-98s look alot bigger -- closer to the 2" (http://63.134.214.215/html/products/kitpage_details.asp?KitNo=KJ09101&MakeModelID=1367&Category=Bump%20Stops)

Thanks Lou... that's exactly why I'm having the issues. I need the larger diameter bumps...
