I assume it's a 4.0. First thing is to make sure there are no vacuum leaks. From there you might make sure your injectors are clean (I recommend the BG stuff). At what rpm will it keep running? Could be an idle motor, throttle position sensor. Can you give a little more info?

1987 4.2 carb. runs great but wont idle 1 minute idles the next minute. sometimes it last a day or two, then it craps out again. help...

okay clean idle tubes, nice and clean. when it is idleing barely i can see gas dripping out of the left side jet into the carb barrel, if that means anything....jim

Sounds like your float level is off or the jet came unseated. I would get a rebuild kit and go through the carb. Sorry about the delay in responding. Comcast cut off my internet by mistake.
