electric fan motor runs a lot

my electric fan seems to run alot when I,m running the ac and maybe the heat, shuts off for maybe 3 seconds and runs for about 5 seconds. Is normal? This is 0n a 98 xj

the elec fan will come on whenever the a/c is on, and, the a/c is activated in defrost mode.
If the a/c is low on refrigerant, or there is low abient temperature, it will cycle often, and so will the fan.

when it cycles like that is it not hard on the fan motor?

That's the way it was designed. Then again, those same designers are responsible for Torx bolts and splined bolt-looking swaybar mounts among other oddities.

Don't sweat it. They do that.
