my vacume for my dana 30 isnt working up to par (go figure) and i was wondering if anyone had a write up on how to do a do-it-yourself conversion for a hard line or posi lock. i found a system on ebay but it seems a little expensive for my tastes. any help here will really help. if your interested in looking at the ebay auction the link is:

As I said....I have a Post-Loc, the actual unit. I think I paid $199 for it, worth every dollar. I have seen some "homebrew" ideas, and some in use, I would still pay the bucks and get the actual unit. Well made, huge cable, it simple works...every time.

im in the process of making my own for less than $50
i should have it finished up this week...so stay tuned and i'll post some pics of the setup.
i also anticipate spending several hours to get it done...so this may not be worth it to some people. i figure the savings will get me one bilstien shock...so hell yea.
my plan includes:
purchasing a cable from www.mcmaster.com (114" turn to lock push pull cable with 6" stroke...overkill...with solid core cable).
i took apart the disconnect. it appears that you can mount the housing in either direction... more on this later.
anyway, i will be using a lathe, welder and press, so not really "light" fabbing.
all said and done..it should be at least as good as the retail unit...and much better than the bicycle cable units i've seen online. i'll have some pics of the components tomorrow night.

well, i was down at the rents machining these adaptors that terminate the end of the cable i mentioned above. the best thing...i think all said and done that this will have costed less than $40
the turn-to-lock cable didnt come with any sort of end on it. just the solid 0.085" cable and housing that measures 0.31" dia.
so i made a crimp on end that also has 1/2-20 external threads (crimps to the housing end...not the cable). this then threads into a 3/8" i.d. tube that i tapped to 1/2-20. this tube is about an inch long.
i then took the stock vacuum actuator and cut out the section with all the seals...removed the "can" part of the actuator. i also separated the shaft from the diaphragm.
basically, the tube will weld to what's left of the actuator...which will be clipped into the housing just like stock. then the cable will be welded to the end of the shaft...and the cable terminator threaded into the tube...if that makes sense. i basically cheap-o machined what the retial unit has...just slightly different. the housing will be mounted reverse stock so that the cable enters from the driver's side (the range of motion of the fork is identical in each orientation).
i dont have time for pics tonight...but i will be doing the install on thursday night and will snap some for a quickie write-up.
guess i still have to figure out where i want to mount the knob in the jeep..
peace
