:repair: I bought another xj last night for the motor/tranny. Its the magical 87 liited. I have found that it appears to have a 44 in the rear. Here's the #'s off the id tag 8953005003 46-13 3.54. I have not been able to crawl under and check the tube #'s yet. :confused1

the cover should look like a shield shape, rather than like an oval. all the XJ 44s that I've seen have had a fill plug that stuck out, and was square, as opposed to a fill plug that is an indent where you stick a 3/8" drive into.

hope it's a 44!

D44's came with 3.54 gears, which the D35 and the 8.25 came with 3.55's. Also, the D44 for the XJ has 2.75" axle tubes, which the D35 has smaller tubes, and the 8.25 has 3" tubes. Hope that helps a little.

Too bad the attributes of some of those axles are exaggerated. Look at http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/gear1.html for real live pics of the above axles. C8.25 won't be an option if it's an original '87 axle - you had either the rare D44 or the more common D35 that year.
