replacement options for 231 in 96

Hey gang,

I have been lurking for a while... but search wasn't coming up with anything specific to my question, so here it goes:

I need to replace the NP231J in my 96 Cherokee because the case is cracked and leaking fluid. I have an '89 NP231 (AMC) in my garage that I know won't fit because of the difference in the input spline (see I did do my research).

what about swapping all the internals over to from the 96 to the case of the 89?

I noticed a couple extra sensors on the 96 model... and the lack of vacuum.

What other years/models would work for a swap? Can I go as late as 2001? What about TJ's... or is the shift order reversed?

Thanks.

I wouldn't use the 89TC the low range gear is not compatible between 89 and 96, you can install a 96-01 231 or 242 from XJ and 96-98 231 or 242 from ZJ.
Additional work is required if you choose to use a 242.
