View Full Version : Disarming Passenger Side Airbag

Is there a reasonably strait-forward way to disarm the passenger side airbag in a 1999 XJ? My nephew would probably have a lot more fun sitting in the front but my sister doesn't want him in the front because of the airbag.
Ideally I would like to put in a switch to arm/disarm it. However, I'll settle with almost anything short of blowing the airbags. LOL
Thanks,
-Brian

I believe Chrysler sells a kit specifically to do that. MOst likely, since it involves a Federal safety device, they will tell you it has to be installed by a certified technician (no over the counter). Not sure on that. MJR might know.

Apparently not. They make one for the Grand but not for the XJ...

I'm not certain enough to call SPOBI on this, but my understanding was that Federal regulations require them to make a disable switch available. However, that may apply only to pickups and 2-doors with difficult access to the rear seat, or no rear seat.
Nonetheless, seems to me I recall someone posting not so very long ago that they had this switch installed.

Brian,
Yes they do make them. You need to get a certificate from the NHTSA (I think thats right, do a search I've linked it before) and then get the switch from the dealer or other aftermarket company. You will receive advertisements after you apply from companies. I have a Mopar one in my 98.
