100k on a diesel is just broken in. Only concern would be the trans, except maybe on the newer chevys with allison.
Buying used generally loses some of that $5-6k premium for a new diesel. Fuel economy and towing ease versus a lower purchase price for a gas engine is usually more of a personal preference, since the actual costs per mile are usually comparable for the first 100k miles or so.
That said, I'd rather tow with my 183k+mile 7.3 PSD van, than any gas truck.

No question.....
Diesel.
While there WILL be someone pop up saying, "I tow with a gasser and it does great!", there is just no comparing the two....
I used to tow with a 5.3 Silverado and it towed well.
Now, towing with a Diesel, I can't ever imagine going back to gas.

Diesels are the way to go for towing. They weren't built to stomp on it and go, though the late models are in a power competition: my 05 CTD has 325 hp and 610 ft-lbs.
If you need to look for a used one, treat the search like you were looking for a good used Jeep. Inspect everything from tires to the oil on the dip stick, underneath and under the hood. You know the routine. Diesel engines can run hundreds of thousands of miles before an overhaul if maintained. Hell, where I live now, I'de be worried about the frame rotting out before the engine wore out. When i drove over the road, I had 440,000 miles on my CAT after a few years. Some guys kept thier trucks for a million miles! Research as much as you can about Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks with diesels before you look for one. You may find some preferences you wished you knew about before you bought. My father has a first generation Cummins in his 89 Dodge. He uses it as a truck, but treats it well and maintains it like you wouldn't believe. He lives in CA, so rust isn't an issue. It looks like it's five years old, other than the squared body style of those years. It has leaves on the front axle, so it rides like a covered wagon. If you find something you like, ask someone who owns one to test drive it with you. If I may suggest, don't buy one that has any kind of power box in it. Just find something that's still stock for now. After you learn about the engine, fuel delivery system and exhaust gas temperature limitations, you can add one at your discretion.
If you're interested in a Dodge with a CTD, try reading the forum here (http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/index.php?) for a while. You'll pick up on a lot.

"Real trucks dont have Spark Plugs" Saw that on a Cummings Dodge Ram... I would definitly go diesel. My instructor is selling a 01? cummings 24valve Ram, 5pd, 2wd, reg cab, reg bed, Dana 80 wLSD. I would rather have that to tow my Heep than my Grand Cherokee. But I dont have the funds :( Also, i hear that the longer the wheel base, the better. A guy at my work has a 03 CTD Ram, long bed that he pulls his drag car to and from the track. He loves that thing.

Granted...in order to ride on it you have to wear a helmet and have your mittens pinned to your coat.
