I just drained the fluid out of my transfer case......Only 3/4 of a quart came out.....The 'peramex' sealant used to seal the case appears to have deteriated....Is it possible to just pull the axles and remove the covers and reseal them while leaving the case in the vehicle?.....Thanks much

Is it possible? Yes.

Is it a pain in the butt? Yes.

If you can remove the t-case, it makes it much easier to work on to reseal the case.

In my opinion its a toss up between the ease of getting the top T-case bolts out and just pulling and sealing it still in the vehicle. Either way is going to suck. If you have reasonable lift and can get the XJ up high so you can sit on your butt while you do it, its almost easier to just pull the backside of the case.
