Harmonic Balancer ?

How can one tell if this is bad? My wifes 91 has developed a rattle @ start up and @ higher rpms, could be rod bearings, but want to eliminate all possible other things before tearing off the pan. tIA for any suggestions.
 
usually you'll see the rubber squishing out between the pulley halves.
You can also see if the serp. belt walks on the pulleys.
You could also run the engine without a belt for a SHORT amount of time to eliminate any of the accesories as your rattle. Idler pulleys can make that noise when the bearings go bad, so can a water pump bearing, but those are usually a grinding noise.
 
Check your catalytic converter also, just crawl underneath and smack it with your hand to see if it's broken apart inside. You'll hear it.
