I have a chance to buy a brand new in box K&N FIPK for the 4.0 for 110 bucks, i drive 25 minnutes to pick up. I know i should be buying a rear hitch instead, but for a daily driver I intend to drive for years, this seems like too good of a deal.

The debate is simply do i capitolize on this or not spend money on this when obviously a hitch, tow hooks, a skid plate, etc is the priority.

I say go get a hitch. When you're stuck on a trail, having a good intake wont get you out, a hitch/rear recovery point will.

Let me rephrase, its not directly

"should i get a hitch, or an intake!" because the answer to that is obvious, hitch.

its should i jump on this deal or save my money

(i will buy a hitch regardless soon)

save your money and get what you need now. you'll have more money down the road to buy the bells and whistles that you want then, but for right now you should be getting the things you need to complete your XJ in a trail ready fashion.

Just to make you feel a bit better, the jury is still out whether the cone filter is a good thing or not. One thing I did notice when I went to my K&N flat panel was that the oil got dirty faster. With the new motor I'm going back to paper filters when I do my oil and filter this weekend and the K&N is coming out, getting cleaned and re-oiled and actually going up for sale at our jeep swap meet this weekend along with a whole bunch of other stuff...

Just a suggestion. Try looking at eBay for your new intake system. You can get a K & N kit shipped to you for under $60 and non K & N systems for even less. I bought mine 2 years ago and love the howl from it sucking all that air. It was a big help in performance. You might then still have money left over for that hitch.

Save your money. All these "breathe better intakes & Adds 50 hp exaust" stuff is mostly crap. Save your money & build a stroker motor. You'll really feel the difference in hp than. Either that or a super charger.

Seeing light through the holes in the weave of the cloth doesn't instill a lot of confidence in the K&N either. As far as cone type filters go, I keep telling myself to buy one of the AEM oil-less filters. (http://trucks.aempower.com/product_intake.asp?subCatID=25)
