get this - had a shop do my master cylinder and slave the other day..

i also had a clunking, rattling, only when starting from a dead stop (i have a manual tranny)....they said it was DEFINATELY a rear u-joint...but the jeep never repeated this noise, only from 0-3mph...

test drove it with a friend, who put a foot on the center console, and put some weight on it,...sound was gone - loose screws/cracked brackets holding the console down....

Yea, but the u-joint's still probably bad. :D

Learn to do it yourself and save a bundle.

oh, by the way, your rear leaf-spring mounting u-bolts are loose. :D
(watch me be right)

oh i can do the u-joint myself - but i got under there, no more than 1/4-1/2" play in the driveshaft, it's tight moving anywhere else.

describe "play in the driveshaft".... there shouldn't be any play at all

the rear driveshaft, when trying to turn it with your hand, it will move maybe 1/4"

aye aye capt'n..backlash in the diff

a u-joint can also go dry and tighten up... to properly check it you should remove the shaft and rotate the joints by hand
