i was wondering if you weld to your xj, and you dont disconnect the battery, what terrible things may happen?
just wondering for a friend or something.

Is it really that hard to disconnect the battery if your that worried about it? Just do it anyways just in case. Wouldn't hurt.

It's best to unplug the computer and battery. If welding with dc you may be OK, but with ac always unplug the computer to be safe. Taking the battery cable off and unplugging the computer only takes a couple of minutes. Replacing the computer and troubleshooting a problem will take what seems forever. Not to mention the expense.
Just do it.

i've never disconnected anything and I've done tons of AC and DC welding on mine, no problems. doesn't mean you won't though, just my experience.

I have had no problem welding on my 89 with the battery and computer connected. I was disconnecting the battery for a while but forgot a couple of times and have had no ill effect.

I was worried about it, too, but went ahead and did it anyway without any problems.

I never even thought of that! I've done lots of welding on mine without disconnecting anything.

Its a harmless habit to get into wether you believe or not. Personally I dont weld on anyones truck with battery connected, its also best to place your ground clamp as close as possible to the area being welded.

An acquaintance recently was plegged with electrical problems after messing around welding inside his TJ, and not to long later his compuker went South.
Could be a coinsidence, but every once in a while I hear stories like that, so I'll continue to disconnect the battery.

well electricity is funny like that, as long as you have a solid ground, closer to where you are welding that the battery and computer, its never going to go anywhere but the ground for the welder

its when you get lazy, and leave the ground on the other side of the jeep, or clamp it over paint or rust or something that you COULD have a problem .

i had a bad connection with a batter charger when rebuilding my engine, and fried the ECM

all that said, i weld without unplugging anything
