Ok I opened the worms up so here is the resolution. What winch do you run, if don't run one which would you run? The Ramsey REP8000, Mile Marker E8000, Mile Marker E9000, Warn M8000, Or other?

In true "Dirt Cheap" fashion,I bought mine used. It's an old-school Warn Belvue, the predicessor of the 8274. Very fast and very strong, but has no reverse and a manual brake. :( But it's all good! It got me up Slick Rock at Tellico with ease!

just get Warn to be safe. a lot of people will say their non-Warn winch works just fine, but Warn's reputation is just better.

Also It dosent hurt to look around for used warn winches. most of them for sale are realy used and you can get great deals on them so far i got a x800i with winch plate shipped for $350 in great shape and a xd9000i for 500 localy. and even used warns are still great.

I wouldn't use anything other that Warn.

My HS9500i is a great winch, it did break the planitary gears, I called Warn, that day they sent me new gears out at no cost.

Great winch, with better customer service

I have the Milemarker E9000. I haven't used it yet because it is getting bolted on to my new winch bumper tonight (as long as I can get the bumper welded up tonight)! I have heard people that use them and they had great results. I have also seen a lot of winches in action recently and I would love to have an 8274 because it is by far the best winch of the bunch but it is a monster to mount on a daily driver.

There are only three reason's to not run a Warn winch. You are cheap and/or poor, someone gave you a winch or sold one so cheap you just couldn't pass it up, or you won another brand winch in a raffle.

exactly... XD9000I is the perfect winch, i wouldn't get anything with a permanent magnet. i've heard they tend to overheat easier, and are not rebuildable like a warn series wound winch.

I have and use the MM9000. It works great but if you plan to pull the whole line at once for some reason it will overheat about 3/4 the way through. I usualy run a strap as far as I can and winch just a little to get me out.

I notice most of the guys have been saying 9000, but I own a M8000 and am happy with it. I have only used it a couple of times, but it seems plenty strong for my xj. With in a week after getting mine on I headed out where there had been some logging going on. Barried it up pretty good. I have seen worse, but it sure was not going to pull itself out, and the warn never even grunted. It popped right out and away we went. Actually the first test I gave it was to see how well the winch bumper I made was attached to the rest of the rig. I put it in 4 wheel, locked the E-brake, and hooked the winch to a telephone pole. The M8000 drug it across the yard better than I expected it to.
I think I have just told on myself.
Yes, I am a redneck!

Well I am cheap, but I have a Ramsey Rep 8000 and I pulled a 6 wheeled Chevy dually loaded down up out of switch back and it never sputtered. Must be because it is mounted to a warn winch bumper eh ? Really though it did awesome. That is the heaviest thing I've winched out. I have never had a problem or had it bog down. It is like 7 years old. Got it from Jeep On-line place in Alabama. I forget the name of it now. Ramsey isn't warn , but they aren't bad. JMO !

wow you must use a real long strap with that.

as to the mm9000 overheating 3/4 way through. i have pulled the line out all the way to the point where it came of the drum and had to put it back on and winched probably 80-90 ft with it and had no issues. i was stuck real nice to, first time out with it and had all the confidence in the world. i have used it dozens since then and it works great, one day i'll get a warn but this was all i could afford and it is great if you can put up with the slow speed

Magnum 9K

Its made by Warn so you can get partsfor it at any Warn dealer.

Its in the same price point as the ones you listed. I use it and abuse it, pulled me out of 2' bog 50' long.

If i were to do it all again I'd by a Mile Marker hyd. because I never wheel alone, in the long run is cheaper (when you include dual deep cycles, a alternator, and required wiring) and as far as speed I'm in no rush when I go off road and It would be nice to I could pull any thing without damaging the winch.

I have a Warn HS9500, but I have been surprizingly impressed with the wanna-be Warn's that some of the members of my club have got. They are either Tabor or Magnum 9K. Everything is interchangable between them and Warns (they say Warn on the solenoids).

Currently on my pick up, I'm using a 12,000lbs. Warn, and I hate it. To darn fast and can't pull squat, even with a snatch block. Maybe I'm "Old School", but I have 20+ years in heavy towing and recovery and I miss the good old worm gear winches, they were slow, but they would pull. So for my XJ, maybe an 8274 or some other worm gear if I can find one.

boise49ers

I wouldn't call mine a wanna be. I'm a tight wad and Ramsey does what I need it to do, but cheaper. I guess you weren't talking Ramsey, but they are fairly cheap. Kinda like my Aussies as opposed to the expessive ones. With my Dis-connect I just pop it in 4hi or lo and I'm locked.
Cheap , but very good traction. Actually if I had the money I would probably go all out, but I have a limited amount I can spend. 2 teenagers and 4 major medicals in 6 months keep me broke. :wierd:

Thats the first I've heard of the Ramsey over the Warn. How can you tell if it's a permanent magnet winch? Also any thoughts on worm vs. planetary. I know worms pull hard and slow and the planetary are faster but any actual use feedback?

That is true and I was disapointed buy that when I got my M8000. But at least the winch itself is made and assembled in the U.S. Also the MM are made in China! I would much rather buy an American made winch with a Brazilian motor than a Chinese winch any day. On top of that you cannot argue with Warn's reputation (or Ramsey's either) or their warranty (lifetime). So there just seems to be no reason to buy a foreign winch when the ones made here (even if they include some foreign components) are better and only a few extra $$$.

Magnums are made by Warn but do not include the lifetime warranty. There is no doubt that when you buy a product you are also buying the warranty. No matter how good their product is there is a cost involved with a warranty and the longer the warranty the higher the cost. To me the lifetime warranty was worth the extra money for the Warn over the Magnum. I'm sure Warn markets the Magnum line (which are made here) solely to compete with the Chinese brands.

The fact that the Warn guy said they are junk may not mean much. He may be an old timer that thinks they shouldn't try and compete with inferior brands. Or he could be right on the money and Warn not only reduced the warranty to save money but also made it lighter duty. I personally believe that the Magnum may not be as good as a Warn but would likely be as good or better than other winches in its price range.

My vote goes to the Warn 9.5ti. I have this winch and it is great. It will pull more than enough and it's fast. You would appreciate a fast winch when on a trail ride. It's really aggravating waiting for someone to winch in 100' of cable at 30 feet per minute or less. The 9.5ti has a line speed of 62 feet per minute unloaded. Line speed might be something you want to check into.

RoggiesXJ
January 29th, 2005, 09:58
Does any of the winches, other than hydralic, have a 2 speed line? I like how fast my winch rewinds, unloaded, I would just rather pull slower when I'm pulling on something. I don't whether all winch lanyards are simular, but on mine, when I release the switch it takes almost a half of a rotation on the drum before it stops.

I went through 3 Milemarker E8000's before getting my one and only Warn M8000. Although Milemarker, Inc. was very supportive, I had to install/uninstall it twice before just selling the last one on ebay. Bad solenoid, bad controller (once started spooling in, didn't stop until I fantically unhooked the battery).

As with most things, even Warn, most parts are outsourced, but have you ever looked into how many North American steel plants and foundrys have gone out of business............. the quality of cast and steel from both China and India meet or exceed the quality of the stuff previously made in North America................the biggest thing to look for when buying is weater or not its graded and tested with actual real credentials.............not just a spec in a catalog, look at the European grading system then compare it to the american one...........Europe wins by far, think of where the final dollar is going try your best to keep Norht Americans employed

old thread but i'll chime in..... i personally have a warn m8000, had to rebuild it a couple of times, but no biggie its old and abused.... now with that said, I have seen some chicago electric winches from harbor freight do some great recoveries. A buddy of mine is always getting stuck, and he has the CE 8K and has put that thing to the test. since it has not blown up yet, i am really impressed, since his whole winch, mounting plate, and some other gear came with his winch, and cost about as much as my replacement warn wound motor.

Do you realize that the majority of the SCRAP steel in the US is GOING to CHINA ???
