A/C Thermostat??

I was wondering....is there a thermostat on the compressor below which it will not kick on?? In other words...does it have to be a certain temperature outside for the A/C to worK or will the compressor kick on at any temp?

The compressor is controlled by refrigerant pressure so yes it could turn on even cold weather.
Simply mixing warm air with the cold controls temperature there is no real thermostat per say.

The compressor has a low press cut-off switch and a hi press cut-off switch.

Hi-Press switch keeps the system from bursting. The low pressure switch keeps the AC system from icing over the evaporator (i.e. cuts off the compressor if the low side pressure drops below the P/T relationship for 32°F or below).

The low pressure switch also acts as a safe guard is there is a refrigerant leak. Loose to much refrigerant, there is not enough to carry enough oil thru the system to keep the compressor lubricated, and it will burn up if you run the AC. If your low on refrigerant, the system may turn on, but drop below that low pressure switch pressure right away, so the system will NOT cool and just kick on and off.

If you've lost most of the refrigerant in the system, the static pressure can below the pressure of that low press cut-off switch and the compressor will never turn on.

You can test it by jumpering the connectors on the low press switch and see if the compressor come on. If it does, then shut it off immediately, because if your low enough on refrigerant that the low press switch never lets the compressor start, than running the compressor for more than a few seconds will burn up the compressor.
