Seriously...is there a way to get them, or not? I've already referred my friend to http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html but I don't know if the '00 will display. They're out of state so I can't exactly run over there to do it myself either.

I honestly don't know, there are such differing opinions on this. After the problem I had two weeks ago I now carry my acctron under the rear seat...

Sorry, they won't - at least not to the best of my knowledge, and that's not for lack of trying. AFAIK the only way to get them on a '97-up is with a code reader. Mind you, if they can get it to Autozone they'll usually pull the codes for you for free.

(Memo to pedants: yes, I know some '97s with certain firmware will apparently let you do the key-on, key-off trick.)

Get a code scanner, that understands OBD-II. It's really the easiest way to do the job...

Bummer that; I'll let 'em know. Thanks.

I just had to pull a code for the first time. The Autozone people just handed me the reader and told me to use it in the parking lot for free.
