Hello all. I have a manifold question of a different kind. I currently have the exhaust manifold off for other reasons. I don't believe that I have any cracks in it. My question is should I worry about it happening? Is this a kind of situation where if it hasn't cracked by now, it should be ok for a long time or that it will crack, it's only a matter of time? It's a 1987 4.0L.
If I don't have to worry about it, I will probably just have it blasted and coat it with some header coating. Otherwise I'll consider purchasing a stainess steel one off of ebay for about $100.
Thanks

I'm normally inclined to say it's only a matter of time, but I've got 250K on my 88, and it's not cracked yet. So, while it may be "only a matter of time," the question of "how much time?" remains.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Meanwhile, I'm surprised they still let you work on your own vehicle in Sunnyvale! The direction cities are taking out here, I'll be glad to finish school and unass California...

SHHHH! :shhh: While I do have a garage, the jeep is not in there, it stays in the driveway. Luckily my house is on a dead end and away from traffic, and you wouldn't know I was working on it unless you saw me working on it. I try my best to keep it inconspicuous.
Anyways, thanks for you input, it gives me something to gage myself on.
BTW, where do you goto school? SJSU?

De Anza. Auto Engine Machining, Auto Engine Performance and Tool & Die Maker. I'll transfer out of state for Mechanical Engineering, since I'm not about to open a shop in this benighted state (I've run HazMat programmes for a couple companies, and it's enough to give me even more grey hairs... There's a reason I don't usually wear a beard - the grey in my Vandyke is enough.)
I don't have anything against people working on their own rigs - but when you get Code Enforcement knotheads driving around at 0600 on Sunday handing out tickets, it gets old fast... I didn't have time to finish those axle bearings, and they got to me between working on it (Saturday & Sunday.) What the Hell is that? I may have had its rear end up in the air, but it was on stands and had the front wheels blocked so it wouldn't move. The guy out on Camden, with a driveway sloping into the street, had a vehicle with its front end up in the air for months and NO wheel blocks - but he didn't get any ticket that I could tell.

I wouldn't worry about it - even if it does crack, it won't stop your engine from running (just make it a little louder...)
Blocks and heads - and maybe intakes - I'd have magnafluxed, but given the location where the 4.0 manifold cracks (down by the collector,) it's just not worrisome enough to spend the money on.

Grrr, DeAnza! J/K When I was in highschool, De Anza was in the high school troubleshooting contest 12 yrs ago and obviously they won for our region. Kinda unfair, but in all reality, I like the campus, it is very nice, especially for a JC.
That's too bad about your neighborhood harassing you like that. I am very happy with my place now, its secluded just enough.
Well, it seems to be that doing any kind of work on the original manifold would be a wast of time. From what I gather, chances are that it's going to crack before it rusts out. So, back on it goes, woo hoo, no money spent there!
