I have a 95 jeep cherokee sport and the transfer case is shot, i bought a 89 jeep cherokee laredo and plan on swapping t-cases. Will the np231 AMC switch with my NP231J.

The 95 has a 23-spline input shaft. The 89 may have a 21-spline input shaft.

Thanks for the help eagle. Has anyone ever seen a transfer case do this ?

Is there anyway to switch it over to a 23 spline or any way to get it to work ?

You should be able to swap input gears on the transfer case - considering that if it were me, I'd go through the transfer case anyhow (and FA the old one,) that's something that should only take a little extra work to do anyhow.

5-90

Assuming it's both 4.0L there is a spline count difference, but all the 4 cyls use 21 spline except '84 to '87 with 904 automatic.
