I don';t think that there is any way for you to do it as a poll... an open discussion would be more like it.
If poll is what you're looking for, you'd have to get better categories: classical, folk (that encompasses country kind of) rock, international, and so on (that's just some examples)....
on the other hand in my opinion there is about dozen different subcategories in Rock which get misclassified often. Look at Classical ROck for example. Ussually into that you have everything bunched from the Monkees to Led Zep, ACDC, Pink Floyd, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and more.... tell me, how can the Monkees and Jimi exist in the same category???? Even Metal has more then 1 category in reality, although generalizing might place it in the Rock category which would mean that you would place the Monkees next to Megadeth (interesting combination, don';t you think? :D)
Anyways, if you're interested in what people listen to, I suggest you go after a thread style response as a poll will give you no info whatsoever.....

I can tell you how the Monkees and Jimi can coexist in classic rock. Jimi OPENED for the Monkees on several occasions in 1967. Michael Nesmith of the Monkees was not a sham like the rest of the Monkees. He wrote and produced songs for many rock, folk and country artists throughout the 60's and through till today. He is sort of a lesser known Brian Wilson. Plus his mom invented White Out.

If it's rock, I'm into it. That includes classic, new, metal, and "alternative," even though I HATE that label. If it's rap, well, most cases are that I don't like it. If it's country, don't like it (you can blame my mother for that...) If it's classical it's good when I'm in the mood.

it kind of depends who you talk to.... some classify to alternative bands like Creed or Stone TEmple Pilots, some classify some harder almost metal stuff.... I think personally that this particular category is somewhat unclassified

July 29th, 2003, 20:09
oh.... ok... so now that woody opened up that can of worms.. lets see... I will post the oddest list of them all (order has no meaning here)
1. classical (organ music : I head tocatta in couple cathedrals around Europe... the sound and feeling is not to be forgotten!!)
2. ballads (primarily guitar, a lot politically driven, mostly Visotstki, Okudzawa, Sojka and Kaczmarski. SOme of you might have heard of first two, I doubt if you heard of the latter ones.
3. Classic Rock (I will classify into this bands like Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Queen, George THuroughood and the Destroyers, The Doors, JImi Hendrix and such)
4. Hard Rock (music of the ACDC flavour)
5. Metal (metallica, apocalyptica, Megadeath and many others)
6. Punk Rock
7. Scottish Bag pipes (old tunes)
8. Sea Chants (something like the drunke sailor but more rythmical, primarily sung in the olden days on tall ships)
9. Bluegrass
10. rags (Scott Joplin and such)
11. whole sorts of blues, although I Think I'm most partial to Delta Blues :D
12. Jazz (oh... Louis Armstrong... Ella Fizgerald now that's good stuff... have you heard the one "baby it's called outside" ?)
13. Big band music from the 20's :D
14. Old Country (have you seen rio bravo? that type of country)
15. Some Folk (have you ever heard "alice's restaurant" ?)
and many many many more as I know that this list seems too short...
I burn audio CD's every so often and when people borrow when them they return them they look at me like I'm nuts due to the wild combinations of stuff that's found there
Kejtar
P.S. I had rap (I actually don't consider it music) and some of the weird stuff from 70's /80's that's called Disco... I think it's called that cause it had to be discontinued to save the humanity from the pain and suffering it caused LOL

Alternative rock, found popularity beginning in the early 90's with the grunge movement if I am not mistaken, as mentioned it is the main stream general catagory of rock with various sounding bands playing everything from a modern version of an 80's rock sound (remakes are popular right now ie; the Atari's and Alien Ant Farm)to punk, ska and as was mentioned metal, and some hiphop/rap influenced alternative ie. 311, however it is not what would be considered pop aka popular music aka top 40 though many songs from bands in this general catagory are listed on the top 40 because of the popularity. I also tend to lean toward this "alternative" veriety of music as of late.
I do enjoy some rap and R&B. The challenge for me (huge challange) is to find rap that doesn't right out offend me because I don't like to be sworn at every two seconds or hear some of the crude portrayals that most rap contains. This requirement pointed me towards old school rap ie the sugarhill gang, and an occasional decently edited version of an album or collection of rap remixes. There is also an increase of contemporary christian rap I've noticed and they don't tend to be crude either.
To help keep the woofers busy I like a little bit of Techno as long as it has bass, and some contrast to break up the repetition.
I really like some classical music. I was just watching Mostly Mozart on PBS and this 21 year old chinese dude played Mendehlsohns (sp?) piano concierto (sp?) #1 , very impressive.
Last week I heard the Mo Tabs (Mormon Tabernacle Choir) perform an arrangement of the hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing with orchestral accompanyment, that left me stunned it was so good.
I used to love 80's rock such as Journey, Boston, Def Leppard etc, I still like this genre but I finally grew tired of it in the late 90's because it just never went away.

What is old rock? Jerry Lee Lewis or Stone Temple Pilots?
Are Dixie Chicks singing Country, are is it the music played by Jimmy Rogers (and recut by Merle Haggard).
I was once told that Disco was an "Alternative" to stoneage album rock ;), is that what you mean by Alternative (this was told while waiting in line to see Black Flag in the late 70's)?
T-Bent, you need to go out and find "The Howlin Wolf London Sessions" (something like that) from ~1970. Howlin Wolf jammin with Clapton on guitar, backed by Steve Winwood and Ron Woods and a few other appreciative guests. The LB Blues festival has Ray Charles, BB King, and a truly great lineup this year (look it up).

Yes, Red Rooster, tracks 9 & 10 of "The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions." The entire selection is Classic.
Don't know about Duck Dunn, just Clapton, Winwood, Wyman, Watts and the studio musicians listed in the liner notes.
Black Sabbath was so 70's and Cal-Jam mega-arena concert scene. Black Flag was playing at the Pasadena Civic and the Golden Bear (maybe 80 or 81') on the same bill as X.
A few hunderd years back I can imagine Guy's knocking back original Budweisers in Vienna, and comparing Mosart concerts, and Brahams for style and vitality. Some things never change.

I like many things. I'm getting more into Christian music (metal and rap and such) for its lack of negative junk. Ya know you won't find any talk about my B***hes or how many people he's killed or whatnot in Christian rap. No worries of satanic metal or whatever. Plus some of these bands are really good. I like POD, Pillar, Living Sacrifice and a few others I don't know the names of. For those who like death metal or the real hard growling metal, you should give Living Sacrifice a listen. Ruslan is a decent rap group. In other, non-Christian music, I like Kanye West's newest album (The College Dropout), Black Eyed Peas, Outcast, old Snoop (ie Doggystyle) and Eminem for rap. I don't like what Eminem talks about some of the time or his language too much, but his beats and his creativity and such for his rhymes and flow are incredible. For metal I like old Korn, their new stuff just hasn't been impressive. I'd say Follow the Leader was their last good one. Metallica, again old stuff, their first 5, I think they lost track of what got them where they were after that. However Load was still pretty good, but not necessarily as a Metallica album. STP was good through Tiny Music, Punk is good. I'm not much into the anti-government and anti-establishment, "anarchist" stuff, more the "pop-punk". Good Charlotte, Saves the Day etc. Older stuff: no one can beat Hendrix. His Blues album is amazing! Led Zepp is good, I like a lot of oldies stuff too, ya know like Casey Casem's Top 40 stuff. The Temptations are one of the best R&B groups of all time. I like country stuff. This is a recent development. I used to hate it until I got sent to Okinawa and started going to a coutry bar there. Then I got drunk and started dancing, its pretty fun. Now I like Kenny Chesney, Lone Star, some Garth and a little bit else. I want to start listening to more blues, especially on vinyl now that I've got a record player hooked into my stereo at home. That's about it for now.

I must say that I just spent the day fly fishing in a sweet canyon. I usually don't listen to music when fishing but today I decided to take the IPod. I listened to Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Coffee Creek, Acoustic Garcia all dang day. It was sweet. At lunch I almost fell asleep after sipping some Chivas Regal and hearing Jerry pick away.

Ummmmmm...I was recently a judge at the Woodland Park Middle School Talent Show (4th Annual). One kid performed that very act and had me in stitches. He was the last act and I was forced to go back and alter my entire rating system for the other contestants. If I had known that he stole the act...he would not have scored so highly. That kid took first place. I feel like I was cheated.

I have no idea what this thread's about, but I'm reeaally starting to like punk again.
Now, I'll go back and start at the first post.

Jesus this thread is old. Punk is the best, especially the older stuff. Much of the newer stuff isn’t quite as good; with exceptions of the early distillers, antiflag, Lars Frederickson and the bastards etc. psychobilly is tight too. It seems universal to me that eventually as a band gets older it loses some of what made it great in the first place, rancid is a prime example. I also like anything that parallels my life, so lots of the local rap that is about drugs and violence I listen too to. And anything that complements an altered state or mind, like sublime.
oh and showtunes. Just can’t get enough of "how do you solve a problem like maria"

Fusion Jazz among other things. There's really nothing I don't like except certain marketing techniques.

oh yeah. but what do you consider pop punk? if you like a punk band and they get famous do they become pop and you dont like them anymore? although there is nothign quite like the sound of not being the best with barely adequet equipment. throw in some oldies and call it good.

i consider pop punk whiny boy bands like fall out boy and my chemical romance that some how got catarogized as punk by somebody. and i used to be a greenday fan until they changed there style, sound just to become popular

Can't pick one by itself, it sorta depends on my mood. But old rock (and I mean mostly '70s) would have to be my favorite. The new so-called country would have to be my least favorite. Real country (including bluegrass) is up there though.
And I have to hold my nose when some of my favorites start getting political. TG there was only one or two Dixie Chicks songs I liked so I just marked them off entirely.
