Don't you love that feeling you get when you are woken up by the sound of your phone ringing and when you answer it the police tell you that your Jeep has been broken into? Yea... great fun, especially at 2:00 AM.
So if you haven't figured it out already, my Jeep was broken into this morning. Yep, I've joined the ranks of thousands who have bee robbed.
Fortunately I live in a neighborhood where an African-American looking into car windows with a flashlight at 2:00 AM gets a call to the police. They caught him before he could flee the scene in someone elses car. Of course he was only borrowing the car and had no idea how my stuff got into it. However here is the tricky part. Of the things that were stolen there were two mag lights, one surefire tactical light, a sony radio with remote, 100+ CD's, a cell phone charger, and a check book (don't preach to me, I forgot it was in there). The police found one of the maglights, the surefire light, the cell charger, and the remote to the stereo in the guys car. The 100+ CD's, checkbook, stereo, and one of the maglights were not in the guys car. We (four cops, me, and the guy who called it in) looked all over the block for the rest of my stuff but couldn't find it (although we found another car he broke into). So obviously there was someone else involved.
Response time for the officer was 1 min 4 sec. Thank god I live in a city (University Park, its inside Dallas but has it's own police and such) where this is about the worst thing that ever happens and we have a bunch of cops on duty all the time.
Oddly enough, I'm not really mad about this. I'm irritated, but not angry. I guess it's because I know that it wasn't personal. It's not like the guy robbed me out of revenge, he just robbed me because that's what he does.
He was high as a kite too. He kept on passing out in the cop car. Him being high is the only thing that explains why he would take my radio but would leave my CB, Police Scanner, Code3 Deck Strobe, and some other stuff. I guess he was just in such a routene that he breaks into the car, goes through the glove box, grabs the radio, then runs and doesn't bother to notice the other equipment mounted on the dash.
Atleast he was kind enough to unplug the radio instead of shearing off the wires.
I guess there's no justice in the world. You start building a Search and Rescue Jeep and help stranded motorists on the side of the road for free and all that you get in return is a broken back window and $2500 worth of stuff stolen. That's life I guess.
Now, let the insurance games begin. Any donations to the "Get Osprey413's Jeep back together Fund" or the "Help Osprey413 build a S*A*R Jeep Fund" are welcome and appreciated.

no offense, but that sounds racist. shouldn't it be more like: " ......in a neighborhod were SOMEBODY looking into car windows with a flashlight at 2:00AM..........."

most breakins have a routine to them. you want to get in and out as fast as possible, to cut the chances of you being seen. looking around at all the other gadgets and trying to figure out how to remove them without destroying their functionality would take time and therefore seriously increas their chances of getting caught. a decent breakin for a CD player takes around 20seconds or less from entry to exit.
when CB's and other stuff get stolen, it's usually a "rookie" random breakin, or somebody looking for that kind of equipment and the knowledge of what to cut/rip and what to salvage.
don't ask how i know that.

I allways think its best to take the law into you're own hands. Find the guy and rob his house in return.

I feel bad for the poster for having his Jeep broke into and stuff stolen. Happened to a buddy of mine and it sucked. Lucky for him, they settled for what was on the roof rack.
Also happened to a guy at work, the thief unzipped the rear side window on his TJ, unlocked his door, then stole the radio, in broad daylight, in a high trafic area.
I know I have high profile vehicles, so I never keep anything in them I can't afford to loose.

No offence but being "racist" is not the issue. Profiling is more the issue and I am all for that. IF this country wasn't so politicly correct and would profile a little more less crime would happen.
Sorry but a black guy walking around a nice white neighborhood is suspicious. That isn't saying anything bad about black people.
However if we would have spent a little more time profiling the Towers in New York probably wouldn't have fell.

Some would say I'm a Lib, but even I agree with you on profiling. Heck, I get profiled for be a tall bald tattooed white male in a leather jacket, but I don't get all butt-hurt because someone assumes that I'm a skinhead. I know I'm not. Regardless, that initial assumption that someone makes might keep them safe in another situation, and I'm fine with that.

Well first and formost I did not write that comment to be racist or to profile. I wrote it because it is a fact about my neighborhood and because that was actually a quote from the guy who saw this individual breaking into my jeep and called the cops.
The last thing I wanted to start was a race war. I have nothing against normal everyday African-Americans. The ones who believe they can live off wellfare and should get special treatment, or who pull the race card everytime they get a ticket or arrested, they are the ones who anger me.
ANYWAY the guy who was arrested is refusing to give up any information on where the rest of my stuff is so I'm pretty sure that it is long gone. And I just got off the phone with my auto insurance company and they told me that I have a $500 deductable and that they will only cover damage to the vehicle and items that were stolen directly off the vehicle. Which basically means that the $1200 in CD's I had in my jeep isn't covered by my insurace company. And with the $500 deductable I will end up paying for all the repairs and to replace the radio.
So now I'm seriously screwed becuase I don't have the money to replace all this shit and I don't have a back window.
87manche
March 1st, 2006, 12:59
sounds about right. When I called my insurance compnay to say that the stereo was stolen from my car she said
"Well we don't cover items that are stolen from the car, only items that are part of the car."
I informed her that it was the whole cd player from the dash. Anything to get out of paying.
I also keep a comprehensive deductible of $50. It's real nice when somebody breaks a window. I know it's too late for you now, but it only raises the premium a bit, like $3 a month. I had a rear window with defrost replaced for $50, so I'm ahead for a few years.

When you get that new radio get one that either has an iPod interface and/or will play MP3 discs. That way instead of hauling around a bunch of CD's (both a pain in the ass and expensive) you can either have 10 MP3 discs with a hell've a lot of music on it (700 megs of MP3's is a LOT of music, average song weighs in at about 4 - 6 megs) or a single iPod.
I no longer carry discs in my Jeep, I got lucky and haven't had them stolen (although I did have a killer stereo stolen :( ) I mainly went to using MP3 discs for space saving purposes. (Although right now there's no discs in there because I removed the radio in preperation of a "new" one. (No, didn't get get it from some guy in Texas :D )

if your like me and too cheap to shell out for a mp3 compatable deck, burn 1 copy of each cd as a back up copy. i keep the back up copy in the jeep and the originals are tucked away in a safe place. if someone steals them or they get ruined then i go and burn another backup to replace that one.

I did something along those lines already. I backed up all my CD's to my iTunes on my computer. So in reality I still have the music I bought, I just don't have the CD's. Ofcourse, I'm still filing a claim with my homeowners insurance to cover the stolen CD's and other things. Still sucks though, my homeowners insurance has a $500 deductable as well... Oh well, life goes on.

Crime is not determined by color but more by social factors.

irregardless
One entry found for irregardless.
Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: "ir-i-'gärd-l&s
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
nonstandard : REGARDLESS
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose.

Osprey, this sounds exactly like what happened to my xj a few weeks ago. They guys at work and I were "profiling" for a bit and determined it was probably an AA. A)only the stereo was stolen and the wiring harness was unplugged and not cut B)he left my johnny cash unearthed box set and greatest hits C)left my cb radio untouched(worth more then my week old cd player) D) left my 1:6 scale nylint crawler, 15ft jumper cables, $200 power inverter E) left the mf remote to the cd player that was sitting ontop of the shift console. Thisis how we "profiled": White guy-would have taken the johnny cash cds and cb radio and the remote, Hispanic-would have taken everything AA-stupid enough to leave the remote and things more accessible and worth 5xs more then the radio. The idoit that stole my shit broken out the vent window on the passenger side while my driver rear door was unlocked. SOB also took my w2 from work.
One more thing, Osprey have UP give haltom city pd a call and see if they can match the finger prints to my case. Who knows could be the same bastard 35 miles away.

I don't think your response could have been more predictable. The death count was 168. That being said, The Alfred P. Murrah "Federal Building" was a "United States Government complex" located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and the target of the Oklahoma City bombing.
It was a "terrorist act" but focused on the Government. Not intent on instilling fear upon citizens of the US like 9-11. Terrible act yes, but in my eyes a little different than being attacked by Al-Qaida.

I'm sure they will. OK City was "only" 168 because he had limited means at hand.
Profiling works IF used correctly. A black in a white neighborhood may be cause for concern but the reverse is true also. Yet our black workers get pullec over/harrassed more often in white nieghborhoods than do our white workers in black neighborhoods. And that's in a company van. I've done jobs in crack city and no cops. Kendrik is pitch black and had two cops and a private security company roll on him (right before he decided to find other employment) in an upscale, high dollar white only neighborhood.
I used to get hasseled all the time when I had long hair, a beard, tats, piercings, wore a back patch and rode a loud bike. Pulled over for doing 1mph over, cuffed, faced down (FBI and DEA around here wear Hi Tek boots BTW), guns drawn, saddlebags emptied (illegal BTW if they don't arrest me first or get permission first), you name it. Why not any more? I cut my hair and shaved the beard off. Still the same old me. The rest is the same but I haven't been pulled over since. One of the biggest dirtbags I know? A white dude with the honest nick of grifter. Steal from ya in a heartbeat, con ya, attack from behind with a bat and so on. Yet his sentences are always real damn short.
Scumbags do come in all colors but look at the prisons/statistics. Maybe it's not necessarily related so much to the color of someones skin but closer to economics.? Who knows?
Studies have shown that a white and a black up on the exact same charges with the same criminial background usually get different sentences. The white usually gets off easier.
I live in a bad area and every time my craps been screwed with or stolen it's been a dirtbag who happened to be white. Three known drug houses within 4 blocks, all white. One dude beat to death (in the alley behind my apartment)...by a white dude. As far as I'm concerned there is no color. Just dirtbags and good guys.

My bicycle was stolen off my porch when I was at college. I didn't have the serial# but called the cops anyway. A community service aide (cop in training) took my statement and said don't count on ever seeing it again. I agreed, thanked her for her time and started shopping for a new bike. About a week later, while I was still walking to/from school, an old lady down the street stopped me. She says you the one got your bike stolen? I say yep. That's me. She launches into this whole big story about all her aches and pains that keep her up 'till all hours of the night and finishes by telling me that that night my bike was stolen, at about 2am she saw a couple of black boys walking down the street. I got all excited. I said I'll go get my shotgun! You point 'em out and we'll take care of this right now! She's staring at me like Oh, chit. I gave her about 3 three seconds before I busted out laughing. I left her standing there on the sidewalk as I laughed my a$$ all the way back to the house. Her sincere display of absolute redneck cracker hillbilly stupidity put the icing on the whole dreary little sordid soap oprah of my stolen bike.

Sorry to hear that. Ten years ago, I had a wrangler with the top off. I had one of those CD album cases filled all the way. It was the middle of the day. I lived in a good neighborhood. Came home for lunch, left my Jeep parked in the driveway. When I came out, the CD case was gone. That was probably 2 grand worth of CDs gone! Still don't have that collection replaced. Those were CD's I had been buying since highschool. Thank goodness napster came along and was "legal" for a while. I burn my CD's from my computer now. I hope to get a deck that plays MP3 format. Then I can fit 150 plus songs on a CD, that is the way to go. I hope you get your stuff back. Oh and I have seen Lord of War too. Although disturbing, I liked it. I have a fascination with Russian weapons and I own a couple of AK-47's. I like Nicolas Cage, he is a favorite actor of mine. Body language.
I don't care what color, religion, or clothes you have on. Chances are if you're a bad egg you're gonna carry yourself like a bad egg. I've known far too many upper middle class white boy "tough guys" to racially or economically profile.
PS - Here's your dollar Gil, now stay the fawk away from me!

Ok then... time to kill the thread and stop this arguement. It will only make enemies. I'm sorry that this arguement even started.

No hard feelings, just good conversation. Diversity makes this country great. See you all out on the trail.

profiling definatlety works, It may not be ethical to do, but most of the time the hunches are right...
around here when the cops see a white in the ghetto they pull them over automatically, I'd say 99.9 percent of the time that white guys up to no good looking for drugs...Thats Just the way It works...
But regardless anyone walking around a neighborhood at 2am with a flashlight is suspicious, bottom line

The cost of MP3/CD-R/CD-RW compatible players has come down signicantly. I had to replace two head units in the last couple months (upgrades and AFU, not swiped) and I spent $129/per for Sony heads with CD-R/CD-RW/MP3 playback and front panel input, as well as one set of preamp-outs (I needed them, she doesn't. Yet...) at Best Buy. Gimme a reminder, and I can probably come up with a model number for you.
Profiling by body language? Works well - I do it all the time. The cornerstone of self-defence is "threat management" - A/K/A "avoiding the fight." It's a flipside of "Look like prey, you will be eaten." Keep your head up and your eyes active, and they'll key on that and leave you alone - criminals against the person are largely opportunist, and will look for someone offering a better opportunity. I'm mildly amazed at some of the places I've walked out of unharmed. Caprini Green and Hunter's Point come readily to mind. (Those of you in Chicagoland and the SF Bay Area should know exactly where I'm talking about.)
Profiling can work, if applied properly - and DAMN the ACLU. Damn liberal attorneys as well - if we were to start "profiling" Middle Eastern men at the airports, I'm willing to bet that they'd be getting their more militant bretheren under control in a hurry - no doubt about it. Communities that are self-policing tend to be much more civilised.
Frankly, I'm just as sick of this touchy-feely approach as everyone else - I just say a lot more about it, and hope I can get people to listen. I can always blame my (now) annoying nature on the brain trauma in November - it's a documented fact that brain trauma can lead to personality changes (although this has always been the case for me - being outspoken. Now, I've got something to blame it on when someone else gets all butt-hurt about it, and the medication isn't working...)

Worked up?
:roflmao:
p'shah...
Takes more than e-rants on a silly jeep forum to get me worked up. I find most of the comments amusing... Especially coming from people who have never been targets of profiling or ever visited/spent time in trailer parks, ghettos or incarcerated. Those of you that have ever been shot at, knifed or attacked with the intention to kill know what I'm talking about.
Just stating a fact... I don't care what color you are if you cross the line.
and yes this country has gone waaaaay too pc... although I still believe a person's actions speak volumes more than their skin shade or place of birth.
BTW 5-90...
I went on a few evictions at Cabrini a lifetime ago... Place has changed... They've started knocking them down... I'll try to take a pic over the weekend... There's $500K townhomes directly across the street from them.
I remember a New Year's Eve 10 years ago when me and a few buddies were doing some security work 2 blocks away and getting sniper fire from there.

I suppose they were going to clean that dump up eventually - I haven't been in there since 1988 or so. Yech.
"Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you!" Sorry, but mild paranoia (not diagnosible under DSM-IV, but there anyhow) has been a standard operating condition since I was about 10 years old - and it's come in very handy a few times. I can empathise with the "deadly force against you" comment - having had it directed at me more than a few times (the difference between me and them - I was a little bit deadlier, and a little bit quicker. Five minutes or five microseconds - who shoots first, with the most effect, usually wins.)
