How much play in shifter?

My shifter has some play, not in gear, but in neutral. Its has about 4 inches at the knob front to back, and about three side to side.

This is play that is easily played with, not just neutral.

mine has that, but I've pulled my shifter and it's shot.

The slots in my shifter are so worn that they don't look like slots anymore.
