pinion bearing

Do I need to have the gears set up as if they were new, if i am just changing this bearing.

There are 2 pinion bearings: which one are you replacing?
Theoretically you can just replace the bearing, but I've learned a really interesting thing: not all bearings were created equal, so when you replace it, make sure that you're going with the same brand so that it's going to be made to "same" specs.
Also when you pull the pinion out and pull the bearings off do not damage the shims as you're going to have to reuse them and then everything should fit right and you shouldn't have to resetup the gears.

Did not know there were two. Are the close to each other. The one i need to replace is right behind the seal on the front dana 30.

You should be ok if you only need the outer one.
Now having said that it's very doubtfull you only need one.
