I've used a sharp prybar or large screwdriver with a hammer. If any scratches result they are minor and nothing that the rtv can't handle when you go to seal it back up.

just take a stiff putty knife and slip it between the cover and axle surface, use hammer if neeeded to tap it around.

Scrap it and buy another axle.
;) of course.

not being able to get off the diff cover may be a sign that a locker install is not for you.... :kissyou:

what would you use that would damage th cover more than the rocks that get bashed against it?

take a big rubber mallet and hit it really hard from side to side.
i highly doubt that you could put out enough force by hand to damage the cover with a rubber mallet. that's how i get mine of the first time. and from now on use a gasket and not RTV. with the gasket, it's really easy to get them off in the future.
and make sure you leave 1 or 2 bolts in the top of the diff cover until you break the seal and drain the fluid. otherwise the cover will come loose, flip and half of the gear oil will be all over you. don't ask how i know. LOL
