Removing "Shift Lever Extension" from Shift Lever on 5-speed manuals?

I own a 1989 XJ w/Aisin 5-speed and need to drop the transmission to change the TOB. Although the service manual from Jeep states these two levers can be separated there is no written instruction on how to do this.

The diagrams in the manual "suggest" there might be some type of pin in the extension and maybe this can be removed from the "extension" to allow it to be removed from the shift lever.

Does anyone here know how to separate these two manual transmission levers?
