11"x40" Lathe

I've run across a 11"x40" Logan/Powermatic metal lathe that is in good shape, runs well. Not sure about toolong, but that is cheap and easy to come by. The guy wants $800 for the thing. I've always hated this type of thread; so here I go, anybody think it's worth a closer look? If it were a wood lathe I'd have no trouble with the decision. Since wood doesn't rust to quick....
:dunno:
Thanks,

TIM

Lathe guys are idjuts. Always sticking their tools in some bore or another. :D

11 x 40 is alot of lathe for a tinkerer, just make sure everything is rigid, with no significant slop in the ways. While your at it, look at the way guides. If I remember right, older Logans were not bronze sleeved, which could be a good or a bad thing if there is vertical movement away from the ways. Check the backlash on the feeds. Anything more than .010" - .015" will make life a headache for precision work and is a sign the feed screws are worn.

Is the headstock chuck tight? No play? Grab your dial indicator and check the runout... NO! damit, not that crappy assed .001" one you use for setting gears, a real one, .0005"...

That should get you started.

BTW, I'm assuming you already have a vertical mill Timmy? If not, you know that you can live without a lathe, but it's alot harder to get by without a vertical mill.

PS: Mill guys rock. :D

You are right, the older Logans are not bronze sleeved. My dad's friend has one. And that is a pretty good deal you are getting. If it is all complete. If anything is missing or broken you can get parts really cheap through a large Harbor Freight dealer or a company like USD.

Well I paid 2500 Canadia for my 13 x 24, but it's new, finding a good used lathe around here is a matter of right place right time, and I got tire of looking, I would check it out for that price.

Tinkerer? Phffffffttt! LOL! You wouldn't believe me anyway. It's not my fault .....well never mind. There's no money in manufacturing. Besides that, if I've got to do more than a few of anything I don't even want to be around me. I don't like dealing with pricks, especially if they are me.
As far as the mill goes, not yet.an old Bridgeport would suit my tinkering needs for the most part. My biggest issue with CNC is that they give me exactly what I asked for; damnit. I hate that!

Thanks for the input, Ron.

You do lapidary too, huh? Cool.

I'm not familiar with the Logan/Powermatic relationship. For woodworking PM is my preference. Now that they are under Jet, parts Powermatics are easier to get. Just can't get what you need for anything Jet; go figure.

Timmy, I'll ride you like a female horse if you have a lathe and no mill... you Harbor Freight, Walmart shopping, manufacturing bashing, poor m f'er! :D

Harbor Freight?!! It's on now buddy! Fight'n words, don't eeeeeven get me started on walmart; home depot or lowe's, autozone or kreagen for that matter.

Definately worth a closer look. I hear the Logans are well built. One of the decendents still sells parts. I think he is in IL now. From his posting on the SB board, Logans are very high quality. Thats a cheap price and an 11" swing is very handy, plus 40" if between centers would be nice.
