Quiet, decent flowing, and compact is what I want. The smaller the better as long as it doesn't cork the engine. It won't be in any place that can get rockrash so materials probably aren't that big of a concern. Flowmaster is definately not going in my junk.

I think what you should do is put a 231 in place of your 242, so you can clock up your t-case, so i don't have to hear you whine about not being able to do your front 4 link the way you want it.....

but thats just what i think.

you have no business posting about mufflers mister.

Now that you have heard from the "hardtoppers" who dont have to worry about noise. I run a Flowmaster, not real quiet but mellow.

Oh, so I'm not allowed to plan ahead Mr. Stringline.

Not to be an asshat, but Den what part of "Flowmaster is definately not going in my junk." didn't I make clear?

I run a Dynomax "Super Turbo" and love it. Thin (so as not to get hung up on speed bumps), quiet, mellow sounding. Chicks dig it.

I used 2.5" pipe all the way from the Pacesetter header to the tip, in preparation for the stroker.

HeySean,
I'm with you on the Flowmaster. I have one in my junk now and its got great tone but just too noisy for a DD. If this thread takes a more serious note (no pun intended), I'm also looking for answers.

Yup, me too. Time for a new muffler, same comments as OneTonXJ. Thinking of just going cheap, but I'm open to suggestions.

Alright you buncha poister nutbags. Let me clue you in on what I was thinking. Supertrapp sounds like a good option to me, but they are way pricey. They fit anywhere though. Beez, think of where Troy (along with most the other competitors) has his muffler, that's what I'm lookin' for.

Hooker Aero Chambers are nice. Built tough and out of fully welded aluminized and stainless steel. Get the one with the offset inlet and offset outlet for the most noise reduction. Just my $.02:)

OK.....OneTon...you lost me. Where are you planning to put this thing, clue in those of us who do not follow the rock crawling scene. If Flowmasters wont work or you do not want them fine, but give us a clue as to what you are thinking and maybe we can come up with something.

I ran a $20 turbo muffler from the auto parts store hooked to the cat and then ran a 90 elbow out the side under the rear passenger door in front of the rear tire. $30 exhaust system.

Beezil
July 22nd, 2003, 13:56
honestly, sean...

have you ever cut open a muffler to see how they're built?

they're NOTHING!!!!!

i say if you can't find one you want that is economical, make or modify one, or steal one off of a competitors rig this weekend, he'll think he lost it on the rocks.

Den, I don't know where I'm going to put it yet since I don't even know what my heep is going to look like yet. Once again, compact, quiet, decent flow. I'm gonna check out the Dynomax and the Hooker. How much should I expect to pay for these? I'm thinking 2.25" tubing.

Spintech anyone?

I was considering a spintech muffler for my next one (I currently run a straight pipe from the cat back). Anyone tried one? They seem to be small and still allow for plenty of flow and are supposed to sound good as well.
Thoughts?

Those look interesting.

I run a Borla and it seems to be quieter and a lot smaller than a flowmaster. Mines an oval shape that measures about 13"X9"X4". If you look down the middle it has the perforated tube (no ridges like a glass pack) formed in a lazy S design. JC Whitney used to sell them for less than Jobber was for me (~$80).

The guy that I have bend my exhaust sells a muffler that looks exactly the same but isn't made of stainless sells them for around $30.

Here's a link. It's where I ordered mine. I love it! It's actually not on my XJ,but it's on my SJ w/360 and single 2.5" exhaust. It has a nice mellow tone without being overly dramatic.

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=1360&prmenbr=361

edit:It seems that I was mistaken on the "offset in and out" deal. I must have been looking at another muffler at the time I saw that. Sorry. I'd still recomend it though:rolleyes:

I've got a spintech with a turn out under the pass rear door. When I went to the exhaust shop I told the manager I wanted something different. He had been putting spintechs on imports and v-8's (said it flows better than a flowmaster and doesnt resonate as bad, and its not the same muffler as everyone else has)and said it would make a straight 6 sound like a tractor. He didnt want to waste one on a str8 6 but money talks, he assured me no one would like the sound so I would have the unique sound I wanted.. I had it full length for a while and liked the tone but when I chopped it and turned it out the side the real tractor sound came alive. They make really thin ones for street rods too. 2 1/4" tall I think. I like it and it seems tough.

The "turbo" muffler idea is great....My personal preference has always been with the Walker Exhaust O.E.M. replacement for a '68 corvair turbo. Real nice deep sound, but not too loud...
And not too expensive. offset 2.5" connections.

I can't speak for the quality of any copycat turbo mufflers though...

I like my $20.00 Walker OEM replacement from Auto Zone...quiet and cheap enough for me not to :bawl: when it gets torn off...

My 1st one lasted 2 seasons under the MJ and 1/2 season under the XJ... It died a glorious death on Daniel Trail in Uwharrie.

For truly effective noise-abatement...I use Iron Maiden or Pantera on the discman headphones :viking:

The Muffler Shootout:

Dynomax is owned by Walker..... so Dynomax Super Turbo is the hi-po equivalent for an original Covair Turbo. Walker OEM P/N cross-references to the Dynomax. I owned a Corvair Spyder---the original OEM sounds good and quiet on an opposed-six with a Rajay turbo---but flow rates have improved since '64.

I've had both Flowmaster and Dynomax on my '91XJ...... w/2.5" converter all the way out the back.

2.5" Flowmaster sounds good and throaty.... also resonates the same through the interior. Within two years you will need a hearing aid.

2.5" Dynomax Super Turbo also sounds good and throaty.... spares you of the ongoing trauma and hearing impairment you get with a Flowmaster.

3.5" Hooker Aero Chambers also sound good and throaty on my 562ci Hemi..... according to the tests, they're rated to flow better and make more HP/torque than all the above.

2.5" Spintech sounds funky on a Chevy Small Block..... can't imagine what they would do to a Mopar.

RESULTS:
The Dynomax Super Turbo (Walker) is a proven choice for my XJ. I would like to hear the Hooker Aero on the 4.0L HO. Maybe it offers the best of both worlds.

I believe they are just plugs. When you install those you should have no noise unless your muffler is so weak it gets blown out.

Anyone have a potato :D ?

On the other hand, they may be something to effectively silence it in the way a Supertrapp exhaust works in which case I may want more info, let me know if this is the case.

I don't know about the strength, but how about a magnaflow. My brothers wifes cherokee had one and it is not loud at all until you punch it and then it just sounds mean!!!!!!! I would buy one, but I can't justify getting rid of my flowmaster for one right now when I need to many other things. Oh well.--------Kyle

It's a pipe plug. I did a quick search looking for a potato in the tail pipe picture, but ran out of time.

If you ran your exhaust straight out the back you could use it as a Beezil defense weapon. :)
