The last "bang" I heard from Brad was a rear drive shaft, but he supposedly has that problem fixed.
Now I am very curious. Come on Brad ... Lets have the news w/pics.

Does it involve a "gang" or a class 3 federal gun license?
If not...
I'll be dissapointed

No pics yet.
I guess it was more of a B-Bang.
Two firsts:
1) I'd never heard of anyone breaking an 8.8 shaft.
2) I'd never heard of anyone simultaniously blowing both front and rear axles.
Till Sunday.
Simple waterfall in the quarry I've done a hundred times.
I hate jeeps.

Front shafts/joints are fine (I think).
DS turns with no wheel movement.
My guess is broken pinion.

Well...
There goes my "How often do 8.8 shafts break?" argument when it comes to discussing the c-clip factor
:D
Time for Warn?
btw...
When it broke...
Did you suffer the mythical tire flying off because the disks aren't enough to keep it on?
:D :D

In this case it's an opportunity to drop about $1500.

The Sean that broke a JKS arm at Moab wasn't SeanR was it?
I thought it was Sean00XJ or something like that.
I could be wrong though.

The news keeps getting better.
Apparently, I tried to straighten the arc of the ring gear teeth that were engaged before the shaft let go.
Add an 8.8 R&P to the list.

If the pinion's okay, just change out the ring gear with one from another set.
Check around, I'm sure at least one person has a ring gear from a set they ruined the pinion in.

January 9th, 2006, 18:00
Wait! You can salvage your damaged R&P! Try this: grind off all the teeth, coat the R&P interfacing surfaces with plastikote or some other such rubberizing product, and set the backlash really tight.
OT
January 9th, 2006, 18:08
Or you could fill weld in the damaged area, grind new teeth, and lap them yourself.

daaaaamn
kinda makes you wish you had an extra pinion support bearing huh :DPinion's fine. In fact, it's amazingly fine.
The ring gear teeth that were engaged all bent before the shaft exploded.
The pinion held up to it.
I think I figured out how this all happened.
I was climbing a steep waterfall (sharp rocks) when the front pinion gear let go.
The whole thing dropped a little ways, then the rear tires grabbed traction. All the weight of the dropping XJ was caught by the rear tires/axle.
The results were kinda dramatic.

Having the gears installed, get a call from installer saying the rear Detroit is toast.
Bent ring gear flange.
