Hi all

Just a note to all 97,98,99 xj owners with factory fogs.

My switch has failed 3 times now! It was replaced 2 times during waranty and 1 time last year by me. Well today I called for a new switch at dealer and was told that they dont sell it alone anymore, it requires a $155 wire package as Jeep has determined that the switch fails due to the wires being wrong size, grade etc... He actually stated that it could be a safety issue...

So i am hoping others will address this issue with Jeep. I am planning to speak to customer service 800-992-1997 after holiday season when the reopen.

I feel Jeep should offer a recall on this issue. How can they fix these switches under waranty and not know of the wiring problem then... all of a sudden they decide that 97,98,99 have a problem and they expect owners to perform the repairs? Also there isnt even a service bulletain about this.

Im sure i could find a switch in a junk yard for $5 but the point is if the wiring is wrong this could result in a fire hazzard. I will post what action if any i get from jeep.

It has been widely reported that those switches burn out with astonishing regularity. Some members here have decided it's the heat from the pilot bulb in the switch and they disable that when replacing the switch.

Dunno if this is serious enough to get the gummint to push for a recall, but it does affect lighting, and that's safety related. It might be worthwhile contacting the NHTSA and see what kind of response you get.

Does anyone know if this affects 2000 and 2001 models?

Installed a set not too long ago on mine....stuck with the OEM set and I agree that the switch does get really hot when in use. Been runnin with them on every day for about 4-5 months or so now....no problems yet.

I replaced my foglight switch a couple of years ago and back then the replacement came packaged WITH the wiring 'jumper' harness. It cost me under $25 back then but now I see that the dealer is selling same switch with harness for $150+.
I'd check around with a few other dealerships to see if you can find one selling them for the original price.
