View Full Version : How on earth do you get the ECU out?

90 XJ - I'm trying to replace the ECU, and am having all sorts of problems getting the thing detached. I can *just* see two nuts at the top of the bracket, but they are so tightly attached I'm about to break something getting them off. All the manuals say is "remove bracket".

Can someone who has done this confirm that I'm trying to undo the right nuts please - they are two nuts on the opposite side of the ECU bracket to the ECU itself, at the top of the bracket, behind the oil pressure gauge.

Any hints on how to replace the ECU and still have any skin on my hands would be very much appreciated!

I had my 90 XJ Limited one off a couple of weeks back.

You should not need to break anything. Stand back, take a breath and have another look at it.

Good Luck.

Thanks guys - with the help of some PB Blaster, a new 10mm long ring spanner and a little more blood, I managed to get the nuts undone. They were well and truly rusted up.

All I need to do now is wait to see how far I can go on the next tank of gas to make sure the diagnosis of a faulty ECU was correct... here's hoping!

Happy New Year to all...
