Take a trip to a yard on a weekly basis :D If pulled, I hear that the 44's go for about $350 :D (about $125 ~$150 if you do it yourself ;) )

i went to the Ecology off imperial highway today, 5 cherokees but no 44's 3 of them have 4.0's and were put out today. so if u need parts they are ripe for the pickin.
I actually found my D44 at the Pick-your-part in Longbeach, you should also give that place a shot, they do have a couple cherokees everytime i go. Make sure its the bigone, they have 2 yards close to eachother

If your still looking for a 44, Quinn at All J's in Colton has a couple listed on his web site. www.boulderbars.com (http://www.boulderbars.com/) If you give him a call he may negotiate the price with you a bit

The problem with an 8.8 is the diff is -freaking huge-, and gets hung up constantly if your running smaller than 33 or 35's.

Really. Thats odd I have read in nurmerous articles that the 8.8 Centerline of tube to bottom of housing is only 5-7/8" and a Stock Dana 35 is 5". and that the clear under diff between a D35 and 8.8 is 10.25" as compared to 9.4 with a 33" tire.. so thats only like 7/8" total. With a ring gear of 7.5 in the D35 an 8.8 in the 8.8 (had to state that haha), thats a larger difference then only 7/8". with a ring gear of I think its 8.5ish in the D44 that would have to make me think that the 8.8" rear can only hang like a 1/4" - 3/8" lower? if thats so then theres not really a big different?
Not to mention you get a limited slip that is better then nada if you arent getting a locker off the bat?

8.8 is pretty big. It's bigger then D35 and D44. Also you can get a limited slip in a D44 as well. The only upside to an 8.8 is if you get one with disk brakes already on it and 4.11 gears (if that's the gear ratio you're after).

What?
You just take it off of the driveshaft on the explorer. If you are good when you are in the junk yard, you take it off of the driveshaft and bolt it onto the axle and go to the register. They won't charge you any more for it that way. You will need those bolts anyway.

And Cal, the pumpkin is quite large but my main problem with it was not on 33s but with 35s out at JV. I would recommend the 8.8 over and over again and if I was going to stay on 35s I would keep it. Now TNT has some cool trusses for it too!

Limited Slips are lastara . Be a man, use a locker.
Another downfall with the 8.8 is that the pinion sits 1.25" lower than a Dana axle (44, 35, 60, whatever). You hit your driveshaft quite a bit more with the 8.8 because of this. I have bent two shafts this year.
Again, I would recommend this over and over again OVER the Dana 44. I know of two 44s with bent tubes (Remi!)

So did I waste my doh on the flange to "allow me to retain my XJ driveshaft"? They told me (and I believed them) that the stock flange on the 8.8 I have would not fit the same stock size ujoint on the XJ shaft I have now? is that true?

My driveshaft shop said that the 4x4 explorers used a 1330 and the 2wd used a 1310. I am unsure if that is true or not but I brought mine to the guy a week ago and it is now on my XJ. I got it out of the yard and it is a 1310.
There is also heavier duty yolk adapters (companion flange) out there too.
I destroyed a companion flange about two weeks ago.

Ok its hyjacking time I guess.. but this is informative if nothing else...
So why do I read (of course its internet) that the Pinion height, U-joint center below tube center is the same between the D35 to 8.8"? I do understand that the tube is .75" larger so that would mean 3/8" differnence in pinion height?
In any case I have the 8.8 in my garage and the D35 under the Xj in the garage, I guess tonight I will see about just doing my own measuring..

Tube isn't bent: the plug weld is busted. Same problem (similar) as with the 8.8 tube spinning. So.... weld it to the housing ahead of time or truss it (either one should get that treatment).

I just double checked. I am wrong about the pinion difference. They are almost the same between a Dana 35 but the 8.8 is almost 1/2 inch lower on a Dana 44 and Dana 60. Regardless I have quite a bit of damage on my driveshaft because of it. Whether it would have been different on the 44 I don't know.
Do your measurements. The fawking 8.8 is huge. I have it. I like it. I have to sell it but I would keep it and truss it if I stayed on 35s. Like Remi said, weld the tubes to the diff when you are working on it.
When I get home I will measure the distance from the diff to the ground (on bald 35s) and it might tell us something about the clearance.

Well if you could do a measurement of both the ground to lowest point of U-joint and one from the ground to lowest point of Diff housing? And evan one more of to the bottom of tube?
Then tonight I will do the same to the D35 I have in my jeep and even though the total for each will be way different, it can be mathmatically figured as to the true relationship of each with using what is given already.
Thanks
PS, I have the TNT truss and u-bolt eliminators coming in the mail already and TNT said that theres no need to weld to the diff housing, only to the tubes, to prevent the tubes from ever spinning.. So, thats what I have planed.

With the TNT truss, I doubt the tubes will spin independantly but couldn't the dif spin independantly of the tubes?

Ground to lowest portion of differential = 10.5"
Ground to bottom portion of the yolk = 16 1/8"
Keep in mind I have 8-9" of lift, bald 315/75/16 BFG MTs, and my pinion is pretty much pointed right at my transfer case.
Now am am really curious to see what the other's numbers are :D

Since Crack head measured his distances...I was wondering about my Heep....
33" MTRs with the 8.25 rear end, ground clearance (thats what we call the distance between Mother Earth and the lowest portion of the diff :laugh3: )' was at 9.5". Yoke clearance was 14 3/4".
This info was provided only as another reference point. I'm not in the market to upgrade to a 44 yet. I suppose I'd need to break something in the rear first....

and so on say a D44 or even D60, if you bearak a axle you think your going to make it any further then a C-style??? Maybe 100 ft more? you ever seen what a broken shaft end does to the inside on a axle tube if you try to keep the veh moving after snaping, That is of course untill the retaining collar on the axle shaft gets pull down the shaft and it starts to Chew the crap out of the brake shoes on the drums, as the axle comes out of the tube.
Now a 8.8 snaps a axle and it too is still moving and again chewing up the inside tube while the calliper is being forced to keep that axle in the tube. After again a short distance it too is fubaring the brakes and the housing.
Now does it really matter!?
Ok lets take full floater! thats where when you compare, you can use the disatvantage of c-clips or retaining plates.... Kinda like this.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-IMCA-Modified-9-Ford-Floater-Rear-End-dirt-track_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ107061QQitemZ4600 442793QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Ummm what the hell are you talking about? WIth a D44 if you snap an axle shaft, you stop, remove the pieces and if you got no spares you run on a stub. If you snap an axle shaft on a c clip axle you have to build some funky jig so that the tire and the remainder of the shaft does not separate the vehicle.

Nothing, it sits in a bearing which sits in a race and is pressed in by a retainer plate. Anyways dude, you're making it all complicated and it's simple:
you got a cclip axle and a busted shaft and no spares you're SOL for most part. If it doesn't have a c clip, you're ahead of the game. That doesn't mean ride on the freeway at 80mph, but it means that you can get off the trail and limp to town. I would agree that 8.8 has fairly strong shafts which means that breakage isn't necessarily too likely. But with that comes a price: few carry a spare axleshaft.
