I'd like some input regarding the types of noise a TC makes (grind, growl, pop, howl, etc.) and the cause for each.

Mine makes clicking noises under hard acceleration, what would cause that?

That's what I'm talking about.
We need people who experienced a noise and know the cause to
help create a list we can use for reference.

The only noise mine made was an awful metallic crunching sound when a bearing let go and the peices got stuck in the planetary gears breaking the carrier and locking the damn thing up solid! Had to pull the drive shafts in the snow, in the middlle of a field to pull the thing home.

I think mine is "howling". The seal went and I lost most of the fluid... A 1000miles later and a second seal and transfer case end-housing, the transfer case is now howling noticeably above 65mph. I'm just looking to swap in another used/rebuilt unit. I assume that this is the transfer case making the noise. The only thing done recently is change the transfer case end-housing/seal and the noise was noticeable immediately after this was done....
Anyone have any problems with the end-housing that could cause the howling? I'm on my original transfer case at 170K miles. Mark

Unless the old seal leaked a lot of oil, and the level went too low, I don't see how a new seal would be the problem.

I only noticed the oil leak when I shifted into 4WD and heard a growling noise from the Transfer Case. I went back into 2WD until I could get back to a parts-place (this was ontop of a snowpacked Loveland Pass). I thought I might have trashed the transfer-case but 1000miles later it was doing fine (but the new seal was still leaking). Replaced the endhousing, bushing and another seal and it starts howling.... It does sound too coincidental.
The next step is either to swap in a rebuilt transfer case or, I was thinking, replace the outer bearing. It does look like the seal may be leaking again too...

whenever i go into my inclined drive way mine makes a sputter noise, like the whole thing is moveing or rubbing, but i cant really tell seeing as how it happens in a matter of seconds.
