97 XJ, 4.0L, 160,000 miles.

Last tuned up 50,000 miles ago. Had all new spark plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor.

Starting to run a little rough and idle high sometimes.

Planning on taking a long road trip in a month and want it to be tip-top condition.

What work should I do to the XJ before the trip?

Thanks,

Jeff,

Best place to start is see what the owner's manual says as a start and catch up on anything you are behind on. If it was my 88 XJ I'd replace:

Normal Maintenance stuff
* Engine oil change and chassis lube
* Inspect and replace engine air filter

These are 15,000 items under harsh driving or 30K under normal
* Change Auto transmission fluid and filter
* Change transfercase fluid
* Change front & rear differential fuilds

These are every 30,000 mile items:
* Spark Plugs

These are every 50,000 mile items:
* Distributor Cap
* Rotor
* Spark Plug wires
* The CCV sytem - Large and small tubes connected to the valve cover
* Gas tank cap

Things that fail anytime after 100,000 miles
* Crankshaft position sensor - it may be factory and they are known to fail at the wrong time
* Oxygen Sensor if the age is unknown, the timer on my XJ said to change it around 80-90K miles

Personal inposed annual inspections:
* Change the brake fluid and have the rear shoes checked and adjusted for proper braking.

Personal 2-3 year items
* Change engine coolant, use distilled to mix with fresh coolant

Personal 4 year items:
* Upper & lower readiator hoses
* Heater hoses
* Thermostat
* Radiator Cap

I forgot to say change the fan belt at 4 years and with 160,000 on it I'd agree with changing the cat.
