Please be patient with me...this is my first post and I hope I am posting in the correct place!
I was just curious which insurance company has the best "unimproved road" and "acceptable modification" coverage?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steph Mac.

If you are loking for towing coverage, most likely no one will cover you on an "unimproved road" unless it is within 100' (give or take) of a paved road. The cost of a large helicopter just gets too high. Collision coverage will usually apply just about anywhere in the US and Canada.

As for comprehensive and collision coverages, look for a policy that does not specifically exclude modifications and improvements. Some companies give a specific $ amount, others are unlimited. Since insurance policy coverages and interpretations will vary by state, even for the same company, no matter who you buy from, you'll want to confirm your questions with them before you buy.

Most importantly, be honest and accurate when filling out the application. If you provide false info that later proves to be important, the insurance company may have the right to deny coverage.

Good luck.

AAA totaled my XJ from trail damage, they included mods when they figured a value for my Jeep.

Sent me a check within a week for $5000, where as a stock 93 booked at that amount, I kept the 'salvage'.

As far as coverage goes, none can or will exclude coverage for when you are off road. The only issue would be under your collision or comprehensive coverage about how much value of your modifications they would pay for in a total loss. I think most will cover wheels, stereo, stuff like that, but not things like lift kits or upgraded axles, unless you specifically applied for more coverage just like on a customized street vehicle.

I rolled mine off road, and they totalled it and paid me off. I bought it back for salvage, fixed it, and kept wheeling it.

It really varies. When I talked to Mercury (my current insurance) they told me that if something is attached permanently to the vehicle it becomes part of the vehicle. Since I insured my XJ with them from brand new and I told them that I value it at $25K (paid less but I got a really good deal... can you say $50 over the shipping cost, plus the cost of whatever gas was in the tank? LOL). Anyways, I figure that for whatever value it's loosing I keep improvbing to offset that partially so they can't really say anything :D

As already noted, each company may have different rules/regulations. My company bases everything -- liability, comprehensive (fire and theft), and collision, on the initial assumtion that it is a stock vehicle. For the older ones (1988 vintage), I can have the limit of what they would pay before totaling it by submitting an itemized list (and photos) of modifications, additional equipment, and major restoration work (such as if I just had the entire vehicle professionally repainted). They will then increase the amount they are willing to pay in the event of a loss, but at a correspondingly higher premium.

My company is also conservative about safety. My Jeeps are all close to stock anyway, but I think if I were to get into anything more than about a 3" to 4" lift and 31" tires, I'd insure that vehicle with a different company rather than have the company I've been with for 45 years drop me as an unacceptable risk.
