Just finished the swap of a 231J in my'96XJ with a 242 from a 97 ZJ.
The TC fits a 96 with a couple of issues.
First the mounting studs on the 96 are quite a bit longer and had to be swapped on the new TC.
Second the electrical connector was different. When I bought the 242 I did on the condition that they provide the connector with enough wire to splice.
The new connector came with 4 wires, Ground, PT, FT plus an extra.
I connected the BK to BK and BK/RD to BK/RD from the previous two wire connector and coated them with liquid tape and heat shrink tubing.
I get Amber light on the PT positions and nothing anywhere else, which is IMHO
the best setup, just as it is used on newer Jeeps.
The Green light is destracting at night and not needed.
The 242J works great and I wish I had done it sooner.
Now I plan to convert my 99XJ.
