Had a couple of chances the past few weeks. Caught a couple of northern pike last weekend. No pictures of any this year. I have some pictures of some 38", 25lb+ northern from last year.
Just wondering if anybody else braves the cold for some good fishing.

I've never tried it. I guess there's a whole different set of challenges to it. I'd be down with sittin' in a tent drinking Bourbon though. I prefer to be moving from hole to hole. Not much different than my MO in the bedroom.

I tried it once as a kid in NJ... still have a couple of tipups and a jiggle stick. I could see myself getting back into it.

You, Sir, can keep your jiggle stick to yourself.

I'll be ice fishing in northern WI in the next few weeks. I can only stand it if we have an insulated hut and plenty to drink, otherwise I just set things up and check for flags with the binoculars between drinks by the fire at the cabin.
I get a couple of nice northerns each winter, 30-35in but usually skinny - nowhere near 25#

Where in the northern part will you be fishing? I usually go every weekend so maybe we could possibly meet up for a day of fishing.

used to go every year, on phantom lake when i was a kid, i miss doing stuf like that i haven't gone fishing period in years but was contemplating getting a boat by spring this year. I'd love to go ice fishing as an adult cause i know the booze would keep me warm!

The family cabin I use is between Eagle River and Rhinelander - I'd be up for fishing any of the lakes within a reasonable (hour or two) drive of there. - It'd be even better if there were a place nearby to play with the Jeep in the snow a bit (without getting beaten by a pack of snowmobilers :) )
(funvtech- I worked at the camp at Phantom Lake a few summers ago- never been in the winter)

If I want Ice I'll get it from the freezer, if it's gotta be wild ice I'll get it from the back yard. Screw that going out and freezing my nads off, too many years on my back in snow and icewater putting track back on or on my stomach buried in snow adjusting arty and close air with just my binos sticking out... :laugh3: :laugh3:

I know it's not the same but...
I went out about a week or so ago when we had that real nasty spell. I was excited beyond words when I arrived and found no one else.

Then I began to ask, as I was freezing while walking, perhaps there is a reason why I am the only moron here?

Probably one of the few times I have ever been frustrated while fishing. I tried to get a piece of grass off a fly and the whole damn thing, including leader and tippet, was totally frozen.

Tried it once while living in MI as a teen. Went out on the bay, broke the hole and sat there with the wind blowing across the ice and freezing my azz off. Never again......... unless it involves a heated shanty (SP?) with booze.

With early ice, we usually have a fire where we are to stay warm. We go to small secluded lakes where it takes a 4wd to go to so there isn't anybody else there to bother us.
After there is enough ice to put our ice shack on than we will be there more than going to other lakes. Just depends on the weather that day. If it is sunny and a mild breeze than we usually sit outside, grill out, have a few drinks, and hopefully catch some fish.
BcParker, When will you be fishing next up in this area? I know of alot of lakes between where I live and where your cabin is. Lets try to plan something out if you would like. Possible snow wheeling also. Let me know.
