On my 89 MJ 4.0 there is a open hole in the block "ear" on the right side above the starter. On my 97 XJ and on my 89 XJ this hole has a plug in it that looks like a screw in plug of sorts. WHat is this hole for? Casting orifice maybe? Why is one blocked off and the others not?

If it's what I think you're describing, there's a small bolt that goes through the hole and into the bellhousing on my '96 with AW-4 at just about that point.

I posted this same question about a year ago , no replies. Saw the hole when I replaced the starter. I have a 91 4.0 AWD and have no plug or screw in that hole. It just seems like there should be one as you can look into the bottom of the block. Would like to get a definitive answer thou.

If that is the hole i'm thinking of there is a TSB for the older 4.0's to add this plug because dirt and crud gets back there and causes premature wear of the rear main seal. I found this info on Alldata when i was researching doing my rearmain. Check with the dealer for the TSB. Or ask the parts dept. for the plug and put it in yourself.

OK, this may be a little off topic but, Can you help better explain TSB's.
I know recalls are safety issues and do not expire, meaning if the vehicle has a recall it can be taken to a stealership and repaired at no cost to the owner.

Now what about TSB's. To my understanding they do have expiration dates? After that time they are not covered. Any help?

TSB's are generly not covered out of warranty unless you bend over the Service manager. TSB's are driver concerns or mechanical problems that are figured out later in time that doesn't effect every vehicle. But the have a considerable amount of complaints where the Technical division needs to find a cure for the problem. For this they must have noticed premature wear on multiple rear mains and found that crud was getting in through that hole. I honestly just ripped up the paper 3 days ago. I will try to check for it today on Alldata.

Ok, found this thread on Jeepforum, has picks of the hole above starter that we were refering to (#13 on the thread). Should there be a plug in this hole?
