will the red pain on an '87 xj be the exact same as the paint on a '90 xj?

Probabaly not- go by the paint code which is on the vehicle plate located under the hood in front of the driver. It will be a two or three letter code, I think mine was PW7 for Bright White clearcoat.

more than likely you'll find that it is Colorado Red.
