my fill plug is 30 mm socket.. but i cant get the same socket on the drain plug because of a raised area thats too close to the plug for the socket to fit on... in the middle of the drain plug tho there is a 8 point star that looks like it would take some sort of male socket / tool to use on it????

Geez - is that a "double square?" I haven't seen one of those in years!
I don't think they even put those in socket sets anymore, and I seem to recall only seeing those in 1/2", 5/8", and 3/4" or so...
Take a picture if you can - it would be interesting to see if that's an 8-point (good luck!) or a six-point "Inverted Torx" (looks like a Star of David.) If you can't get it sorted out, take a picture with a ruler held to measure across opposite corners, and we might be able to figure it out alongside you...

Weird - it should be the same size either way; 30mm 6- or 12-point to remove it. After 1997 the plugs were changed to a much smaller style that if I remember correctly used a 3/8" ratchet to remove it.
Fill plug is visible, drain plug is off the lower left corner:

If it's a 30mm outer hex with an 8 pt internal (not 6 pt), a standard 3/8th drive ratchet fits right in. This newer style aftermarket replacement plug is becoming more popular because it gives you another option of removing the plug if the 30mm hex strips out. I've replaced both of my stock plugs with this newer style plug.

I am sure some would consider it a big no-no but to be honest I've never used anything but a pair of channel locks without any issues. Some things don't have to be that difficult unless the plug is really stuck in there. Oops, my bad,.. I was looking at the fill plug. But still,... its a thought.

Once again it's an aftermarket replacement plug. It's identical to the flat 30mm plug with the addition of 8 pt 3/8 cavity. This plug can be used in place of all 30mm (obviously) check/drain plugs and also the 10mm allen head plugs.
