Difference in blower motors

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the 96- and 97+ blower motors? My brothers 2001's blower is like a wind tunnel (his #1 speed feels like my 90's #4 speed) I would like to put one of the new styles in mine if it is bolt and play but I'm not sure. Does anyone know?
